I was reading a hilarious thread about a very earnest poster who was concerned about the Democrat Party, had 32 posts, and was afraid they were being silenced. But when I exited and tried to revisit, the whole thread was gone. Since I'm not a big football fan and everyone in my household is, I was hoping for some entertainment.

(14,757 posts)Demonizing anyone that does want to as a "troll". Even if someone is not politically lockstep with most of us, I think its still benificial to air our differences with someone who may be genuinly curious. Also for any lurkers who just read it. If we are truly confident in our parties direction and policies, we should not be afraid to defend it.
And it also feels a little ominous just contributing to this thread on the topic. Like someone is taking notes, and just itching to hit the report button on all of us for daring to bring up the topic.

(114,704 posts)over the many years, I've been here. CONSTRUCTIVE critiques, being the point. Tearing down one faction or one personality (e.g., AOC and the progressive "squad" or conversely the more moderate factions) doesn't play well, but debating their direction and proposals is fine. Evidence the more recent debate about changing the primary schedule...
LiberalLovinLug
(14,757 posts)And in each case I appealed because it seemed a mistake. One I simply said that corporate influence is also too heavy on Democrats. Then I posted a link from a reputable, non RW source who had done a study, backing my statement up how BOTH parties have a problem with this, and gave factual stats to prove it.
For specific inside debates like changing the primary schedule is one thing, but opening up a discussion about options to established leaderships positions, about who they set themselves up to be indebted to, even debating if its right for the party's treasury to support a more conservative Democrat to compete against a more progressive Democrat candidate in a particular riding. If you are on the "wrong" side of any of these topics you are flagged and soon learn there are certain discussions, bizzarely I think, that you just cannot talk about.
And I've learned to be fine with it. Because there is more good than bad here by a long shot. A lot of good people and I'd say 95% in agreement with my political beliefs. So I've learned to accept the rules and adapt. Its just that I think this site could be so much more, if we didn't have to be paranoid about discussing "big picture" topics surrounding what it means to be a Democrat. Whats the difference between that and a liberal, or a moderate and a progressive? What are the differences of the more conservative and the more progressive wings of the party? What are the pros and cons of each side. And ultimately through discussion, we find ways we agree and so find ways to work together.

(114,704 posts)But, you are right. Anyone here long enough is going to have a post/thread misunderstood and a hide or two as a result. It sucks, but it happens.

(26,467 posts)In the US we call them districts for the House. The unit where Americans vote is called a precinct. We don't have ridings.
A tip for you: Democrats don't say "a Democrat candidate." That's something that Republicans say, derisively.

(15,909 posts)...that's a pretty good sign you're dealing with a troll. And if not a troll, someone who is spectacularly ignorant.

(72,528 posts)If someone comes here saying Democrat Party, theyre not looking for open and honest discussion. Theyre pissing in the punch bowl to see what we do about it.
Anything we do other than shoving them into heavy traffic and deleting their account is a waste of time.

(14,757 posts)I'm from Canada, and I guess I hadn't had the history lesson. I was chastised about it and I soon learned to say it properly.
Now this person could very well be a troll. Or just ignorant like me, or has heard enough RW media in a casual way that they just assume it can be said either way.
But I'd weight on the side of benefit of doubt first. And at least at first accept some level of ignorance in new members. If they are truly trolls, it will come out soon enough when they get tired of pretending. Then tombstone them. This rush to judgment, this assumption of trolliness, where guilt is judged by "a pretty good sign", is paranoid and knee jerk before we even get a chance to discuss.
I also found the thread, and it sucks that we can't even see the posts that someone thought went too far. We don't know how many come here with RW biases, yes, but maybe willing to listen, if we allow that kind of discussion in here. Even if it goes the other way....and the community here proves how wrong they are and they leave in a huff. Its still educational to other readers. if they are simply spewing insults of course stop it, but if they are simply asking uncomfortable questions....either from the left or from the right.....I think the conversation should be able to run its course.
Now I do love preaching to choir. Its way more pleasant in this all inclusive resort of Democratic loyalists, where you keep outsiders out. And there are other sites I can have arguments with MAGATs. So that's why I'm not complaining too much. But it just seems there could be so much more rich discussions going on. If they were allowed to develop.
Perhaps a special forum where that first rule about DU (that you can't talk about DU) is lifted, and you enter at your own peril. Or where some thread like the one exampled is moved there and is allowed to continue....as long as it doesn't get racist, sexist, personal insults, etc...
EDIT: Like I'd love to see what the person below me that had their post removed said in response to mine. It was directed to me, I'm a big boy, I can handle it.

(11,767 posts)I have made many a criticism of President Obama, President Biden, my Senator from California Diane Feinstein, etc...
What I don't do, is bash people, overgeneralize, or say things like, "They are horrible". I simply say, this is a policy that I disagree with and the following are the reasons why: Reason A, Reason B, etc...
Certainly there are people who might see any criticism as an "attack on Democrats" but I don't believe that I have ever had a thread or post blocked, and I have had plenty of arguments with people on the board.

I asked one poster why he did that.
How is it supposed to be an insult?
He did not answer. He had no clue.

Original OP was: "Are we allowed to openly discuss issues here?" Meaning, why can't we trash and bash Democrats while pretending it's constructive criticism here?
Then *buckling seatbelt*: "libruls" "comrade" "Democrat Party"; Faux (I guess means Fox) has been coopted by Disney; asking if the internets are being controlled by communists and if John Edwards and Gary Hart were set up. The usual nutty rapid response.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
