Many who work for others look at their paycheck every week/month and wonder why it doesn't add up to the amount they're earning. It's because (most) of the deductions from their checks are providing Social Security and Medicare for the elderly. And when any working person turns 65, all of those deductions start paying for their own Social Security and Medicare.
That's the way it works. It's really that simple.
Republicans hated it when it became part of our system, they hate it now, and they want to end it. They call those payments "ENTITLEMENTS," to make people think the government is handing out charity. Democrats call them EARNED BENEFITS, which is what you paid for your entire working life.
Why are Republicans against these fair, decent, civilized programs? Because they don't want that money going to the peasants, (the vast majority of us). They want it to go into the pockets of the very wealthy and themselves.
We are fed much shit by Republicans about Social Security going broke. Well, that may be, because they have been stealing from the Social Security fund for decades for their "sacred tax breaks for the rich." If they'd keep their fucking hands off of OUR MONEY, our benefits wouldn't have a shortfall.
Joe Biden called them out on this during the SOTU and they booed him. Gotta' wonder why. And then he flipped it on them and told them that it was good that everyone agreed on the necessity of Social Security and Medicare. Then they applauded him because they didn't want to appear to be the dicks they are.
But, of course, as always, Republicans are full of shit. They will not abandon their efforts to fuck Americans out of their earned benefits for the sake of their owners and themselves.
Let no one ever again ask why Republicans are horrible human beings. Believe them when they show us it's who and what they are.

(11,686 posts)I've been paying for that since I was 15.
I tell everyone who works that fact, because THEY are paying for it too. So damn right we're entitled to it, we paid for it.

(25,942 posts)before retirement, and still have to pay taxes on a retirement pension. Often I worked two jobs, a full time and part time one when I wanted extra income for a special, expensive purchase.
In fact, I've actually "worked" since I was a child in elementary school, setting up a lemonade stand and a "store" for selling my mother's cast off jewelry, dresses, and shoes when she cleared out her closet. Plus, my sister and our best friend and I put on "shows" in the neighborhood that we charged a nickel admission for.
But we never made enough to report to IRS.
When I was 11, I "babysat" for a neighbor's 4 month old for 2 hours while the mother went to the grocery store in the middle of the afternoon. The baby slept in her crib the whole time and my mother and neighbors were nearby if I needed help or advice. Throughout my teens, I earned pocket money from babysitting, but never enough to report.
But from 18 to 68, I worked steadily, paying into my earned benefits.

(130,479 posts)you have a legal right to receive, not something that's being given to you that you didn't earn - that's the GOP's false definition of the word. But SS and Medicare are, in fact, entitlements because you paid for them and you have a legal right to receive them.

(4,624 posts)We have to publicize the fact that Social Security and Medicare are actually LEGAL ENTITLEMENTS, meaning they are funds to which you are LEGALLY ENTITLED, if you paid the required amount of money into them.

(14,721 posts)To describe selfish assholes. The ones who cut in line with 20 items in the express lane. "Self-entitlement" is not earned, it's just being a jerk.
The GOP wants you to think of those people when they talk about "Entitlements" as a burden.
Workers who spent a working lifetime paying into Social Security and Medicare are not selfish - they earned their benefits. The governemt has an obligation to pay what was promised.

(2,047 posts)and those witholdings were not just for me but also for my parents whose generation didn't pay enough to cover the cost of their coverage.
I really think I started 'earning' mine when payroll deductions for my coverage were increased by the Reagan admin, to pay the cost of benefits for my 'greatest generation' parents who refused to contribute to the college tuition of ANY of their sons.

(31,895 posts)of my annual salary up to the the cap every year for the last 40+ years.
I would be very happy to take that 15% as a lump sum when I retire soon.
No matter if I live another 20 years or 30 years (unlikely), my expected SS will be much less over that time frame.

Youve subscribed to the ugly MAGA distortion of the word, trying to make it mean theft , or unearned charity. That not what enTITLEment means . See the word title in there? It shows you own the title to it.

(4,624 posts)Therefore it is your ENTITLEMENT. You have a legal right to it. DO NOT LET THE RIGHT WING OF THIS COUNTRY CHANGE OUR LANGUAGE TO ADVANCE THEIR TWISTED AGENDA.

...and moneyed interests, along with many business owners, want to be able to dictate whether or not they would provide their employees a "cost sharing" retirement or health care plan, that they can also manipulate to their benefit should they feel the need to.
Marketeers want to be able to provide a myriad of confusing, fee heavy, profitable plans to "manage money" for small businesses and "poor, stupid workers" who don't have investment or contract lawyers standing by.
It's all about the Freedom to feed off all those "lesser people" who don't have the right to exist if they can't create a profit.

(15,388 posts)Republicans are great at this kind of crap. They made "Liberal" a dirty word long ago. It was a word that they all said with a sneer when they were in front of a camera.
When will people ever learn they're being conned? Too many Americans buy the snake oil Republicans constantly sell.
You'd think that once they got it home and learned it was a bag of shit, they'd have caught on. But they never seem to get it, and they'll always buy the next dose of snake oil Republicans are selling them.

(38,184 posts)...to strongly link "entitlement" with "welfare" in peoples' minds, and they did it as part of their campaign to do away with Social Security and Medicare.
They floated the percentage of the federal budget going to entitlements (most of which were SocSec and MediCare) then bait&switched to talking about welfare. It was to use people's prejudices and bigotries to conjure the image of a vast army of layabouts living off of your hard-earned tax dollars.

(14,438 posts)Of course, we are entitled to it. We worked for it. We made a trusted agreement with our government that they would keep it for us until we reached a certain age. It is ours.
But there is a fellow who sees us collecting our own money and points at us telling others how ENTITLED we think we are, taking money from the government when it could be used for lots of other stuff.
That fellow is called a Flim-Flam Man. Thank goodness Joe Biden has been around the block a few times and has seen his share of these guys.
