"Everyone in the United States will have access to Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine regardless of their ability to pay," the company said in a statement.
Last month, the vaccine maker was slammed for reportedly considering a dramatic price increase for the shot, which it had developed with the help of the federal government.
The proposal was also bad timing: The Biden administration was moving toward ending its designation of a public health emergencyon May 11, which meant that federal funding for vaccines would soon dry up and uninsured Americans would have to pay out of pocket for their boosters.

(61,033 posts)They've already made millions from the federal government for the development, and the doses only cost pennies so I wouldn't begrudge them from to doubling or even tripling that.
A small profit seems reasonable.

(78,200 posts)I'd read that Pfizer developed theirs independent of the Fed. Can't recall source, likely DU post. Lol
This was a major deciding factor for me choosing Pfizer, considering the slob admin's involvement.

(61,033 posts)as it was what was being provided at the site I got vaxxed both times. Still, how go they charge a hefty fee if it's available for free elsewhere?

(78,200 posts)It will be interesting to see how all this plays out, but I'm glad Moderna will be free!
I've had all Pfizers so far, but if they're charging a lot & Moderna is free, it will be Moderna for me!

(2,797 posts)It says access regardless of ability to pay. I imagine if you are insured/Medicare/Medicaid, it will be covered by insurance with no cost to patient. Additionally, they probably will make avenues for uninsured access at no out of pocket cost.

(22,333 posts)My first 2 shots were Pfizer, but at least one of my boosters was Moderna. I read at the time that it didn't matter, so I took whatever was available.
I'd have to dig out my card yo tell you which one(s). I can't keep track in my head at this point.

"We're going to ask them, 'Hey, you made billions of dollars in profit on a vaccine that was developed because of taxpayer support... you've become a multibillionaire, and you think it's appropriate to cost the federal government even more money by quadrupling prices?'" Sanders said.
