Catalytic converter thief killed when driver wakes up and runs over him, authorities say

A man was run over and killed Tuesday after he allegedly crawled under a parked SUV and tried to steal the catalytic converter in Palmdale, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. at a retail parking lot in the 39000 block of 10th Street West, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Four people were inside a vehicle parked near a Ford Excursion, according to the Sheriff’s Department. A man got out of the vehicle and crawled under the SUV, where he began trying to saw off the catalytic converter.

A woman who had been asleep in the Excursion woke up to the noise of the saw. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the woman turned the car on, put it in reverse, then “felt a bump like she ran something over.”

What is the point of working if you can't pay everything to survive. One car repair, doctor visit, ect and cant pay the rent, etc. The middle class thinks they are having trouble and the low-income class isn't having it even more difficult?

I would think times need to be a bit more extreme for that. But I'm an American citizen who didn't work with another American citizen until I was 31. So my experience doing low class jobs during recession has impacted my opinions on this.

Here in Washington there are children attending school from shelters and cars. I suggest start educating yourself about reality for many in this country

We had very little growing up, and some thieves stole the drive shaft off my dad's car during the night. We had no insurance then, so many decades ago. My dad had to work and save so many extra hours to try to get enough money to fix our poor old car so that he could go to work and not depend on rides to get him there.

How many catalytic converters do you need to steal to make a living at it? How many people do you need to hurt? What level of crime is okay to justify your situation, especially when there are so many social programs available to help out?

My husband and I both worked, sometimes three jobs between us, and raised two children, and it never entered our minds to do something like this, even when we were exhausted.

I am actually sorry this guy died and didn't have chance to change his life. It was a very big price to pay.

Him willfully putting himself in a place/situation where that very thing could happen and he must have, at some level, known it was possible. He chose to be a dick and take that chance and he lost. That kind of getting what's coming.

Others do it at night, and if confronted have pulled guns and even fired them. The problem is that the right will claim that these guys aren't punished when caught, and that is partly true.

I had a plumber at my house the other day and he gave me his thoughts, that's how I know.

The CC Gets PRETTY HOT. I doubt a thief would continue if the vehicle started. Might need a 5 or 10 minute shut off for it though.
