Moderna says its COVID vaccine will remain free for consumers, even those uninsured
ByAnne Flaherty ABCNews logo

Moderna will keep its COVID vaccine on the market at no cost to consumers, even after the federal government stops paying for it, the company announced Wednesday.
"Everyone in the United States will have access to Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine regardless of their ability to pay," the company said in a statement.
Last month, the vaccine maker was slammed for reportedly considering a dramatic price increase for the shot, which it had developed with the help of the federal government.
The proposal was also bad timing: The Biden administration was moving toward ending its designation of a public health emergencyon May 11, which meant that federal funding for vaccines would soon dry up and uninsured Americans would have to pay out of pocket for their boosters.

(3,459 posts)However, I've seen more math illiteracy on this issue. The price did not quadruple - it was actually multiplied by 5, not 4.
A "400% increase" doesn't mean that the amount quadrupled. If an amount quadruples, that's a 300% increase.

(23,770 posts)So a fifth of $130 or $26 was the original price? Always have disliked when journalists use percentages,
they can hide the truth or exaggerate it, why not plain old facts & figures for us simple minded people?

(127,983 posts)Charge" and President Joe Biden is the Democrat that is in charge. My original post in this thread simply acknowledges that fact.
BTW, did the CEO of Moderna say he was backing off the price increase because of Bernie? I have not read a quote from the CEO crediting Bernie for halting the price increase.
Malmsy
(339 posts)It apparently wasn't fear of testifying before the the Senate and Sanders that caused the price reversal.
https://www.commondreams.org/newswire/news-moderna-ceo-agrees-to-testify-in-senate-help-committee
And Sanders wasn't the only one criticizing Moderna for the price increase, so there's that.

(29,226 posts)If the Moderna CEO said that this week I can't find it anywhere.
Pfizer has had assistance programs for the uninsured for years, announced last month free COVID vaccines after May. Moderna has done the same. The Biden administration requested Congress fund programs to provide free vaccinations for the uninsured (children already covered but not adults).
I can't see any reversals. I wish I could see the full Moderna CEO quotes but can't find them. As far as I can tell, the price will be raised and insurance companies will pay them, not the insured or uninsured eligible for assistance programs. Maybe more information will come out about it.

(21,115 posts)The real question is why the funds requested by President Biden to replenish the vaccine stockpile didn't make it into the omnibus package.
It was always obvious that without a guaranteed market, costs to vaccine providers were likely to increase. And FWIW, not a single legislator voted against or withheld a vote because the covid relief provisions were stripped from the bill.
While a replenishment of the vaccine stockpile was not funded, the omnibus bill did provide for $8,500,000,000 to purchase additional F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin.
Go figure.

Is there anyone else that does that? Have we trained, too well, Democratic politicians that politeness is first and foremost? You can't fight an enemy that remains unidentified.

(29,226 posts)Both say the insured won't pay for vaccines as usual (insurance companies pick up the increased cost) and both have patient assistance programs where the uninsured can get the vaccine free, but didn't see anything saying they aren't raising prices after May 11. Does anyone know?
