"Ron DeSantis told all public universities in Florida to hand over the medical records of all trans students.
Insider has confirmed six of the 12 universities have complied with the request.
Now, college students across the state are planning a walkout to protest the governor's request.
Students across Florida are planning a statewide walkout after Gov. Ron DeSantis requested all public universities comply in delivering data from student health services on transgender students who sought gender-affirming care at the institutions."

(2,360 posts)That being old does not mean you are angry or conservative.

And the poor, and the many who have other reasons to be there and can't just up and leave. Who we need there to fight for right.

(29,368 posts)I started looking in July, because I knew all these wingnuts from the NE moving here would reelect him and he'd go full Hitler. I signed a job offer recently, at a much better university at much higher pay with a signing bonus.
It is 1932 Germany here in Florida now.

He loves this damned state. He grew up here and he loves the climate. He literally has no body fat and cant tolerate the cold.
If he beats me to St. Peter, I am heading out to Los Angeles.

An asylum program to get them into safe places and help them get jobs, educations, and a fresh start in life.

(29,368 posts)And social media texts and log-ins, but oh no, I was a liar or a dupe! And all DEI funding was to be cut off on February 1 and books were being pulled from the stacks (at a university). Oh no, I was wrong! It was a scam and some of you didn't buy it and said I was wrong or a liar! Even though I was involved with this, and refused to do so. I was attacked so badly I deleted my thread.
The universities here are under attack in many ways. I am glad some people here are starting to take it seriously.

(821 posts)medical records are covered under HIPAA. You cant just release medical records of individuals without their consent. There most likely is information in the medical records that makes the individual identifiable. Most records would have their name and date of birth. Also past medical history could identify somebody.

(8,199 posts)When I went to college (public university) the university didn't have ANY of my medical records. Why would they? They're not my doctor.
Also, the university didn't know if I was gay straight trans or whatever, so how in the heck are these universities identifying "all trans students"? It's none of their business if someone is trans.
Geez, DeFascist truly is a fascist.

(2,360 posts)They would have a record of that.
If you had a medical condition and live on campus, they have a medical record.
Just looked at the local university requirement.
The State of New York and SUNY Plattsburgh require that all students enrolled in six or more credits must: Be immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR); Forward a completed medical history, immunization record, and physical examination report to the center within thirty days from the first day of classes

(7,229 posts)If they were complete medical records with the students' identifying information, then someone's in big, big trouble. If they were de-personalized, it's a different matter. Still: whatever does DeSantis plan to do with this information? Why on earth does he care? He proves again and again and again that he's just a sick creep! Fixated on drag queens and trans. Makes me think he has something in his psyche that he's trying to expunge. Ugh.

The ACLU needs to jump in on this, and if there's the obvious govt overreach that I see, I assume they will. Where does such intrusion end? It's like he's testing the waters to see what he can get away with.

(114,614 posts)Those six universities need to be sued for privacy violations. Ron DeSatan has absolutely no grounds on which to demand any medical record of any student in the state beyond prurience and vindictiveness.
Where the hell is the FCLU?
onenote
(46,139 posts)HIPAA protects most individually identifiable health information and there are specific provisions that allow for the disclosure of information that has been "dis-identified". The schools that respond to the demand for trans-related information have stated that they did not provide any personally identifiable information. If you have information to the contrary, you should post your source.
The request for information, even on a dis-identified basis, is outrageous and should be condemned. But we do ourselves no help if we make claims about legal violations that we can't back up.
Warpy
(114,614 posts)I did wonder if the six compliant universities were compliant because they had no trans students they were aware of. Transitioning is still very rare, although the right wing would have us believe there's a confused kid on every block being surgically mutilated at the age of ten by overbearing liberal parents.
And you're right, the fact that he's demanding medical information on adults is outrageous, decoupled from specific names or not.
