These are adults DeSantis! Doesn't HIPAA laws cover this? this has to be illegal! College Students

private medical info being turned over to the Florida Gov.?? Am I wrong about this??

Ron DeSantis requested the medical records of all trans students in Florida's public universities. Now students are planning a statewide walkout.

https://news.yahoo.com/ron-desantis-requested-medical-records-145417991.html

"Ron DeSantis told all public universities in Florida to hand over the medical records of all trans students.

Insider has confirmed six of the 12 universities have complied with the request.

Now, college students across the state are planning a walkout to protest the governor's request.

Students across Florida are planning a statewide walkout after Gov. Ron DeSantis requested all public universities comply in delivering data from student health services on transgender students who sought gender-affirming care at the institutions."

need to establish funds through contributions and networks of companies and individuals to help people move out of Forida, Texas, and other deep red states that are trampling over women's health, LGBTQ people, and POC. An asylum program to get them into safe places and help them get jobs, educations, and a fresh start in life.

medical records are covered under HIPAA. You cant just release medical records of individuals without their consent. There most likely is information in the medical records that makes the individual identifiable. Most records would have their name and date of birth. Also past medical history could identify somebody.

When I went to college (public university) the university didn't have ANY of my medical records. Why would they? They're not my doctor.

Also, the university didn't know if I was gay straight trans or whatever, so how in the heck are these universities identifying "all trans students"? It's none of their business if someone is trans.

If they were complete medical records with the students' identifying information, then someone's in big, big trouble. If they were de-personalized, it's a different matter. Still: whatever does DeSantis plan to do with this information? Why on earth does he care? He proves again and again and again that he's just a sick creep! Fixated on drag queens and trans. Makes me think he has something in his psyche that he's trying to expunge. Ugh.

HIPAA protects most “individually identifiable health information” and there are specific provisions that allow for the disclosure of information that has been "dis-identified". The schools that respond to the demand for trans-related information have stated that they did not provide any personally identifiable information. If you have information to the contrary, you should post your source.

The request for information, even on a dis-identified basis, is outrageous and should be condemned. But we do ourselves no help if we make claims about legal violations that we can't back up.

I did wonder if the six compliant universities were compliant because they had no trans students they were aware of. Transitioning is still very rare, although the right wing would have us believe there's a confused kid on every block being surgically mutilated at the age of ten by overbearing liberal parents.

And you're right, the fact that he's demanding medical information on adults is outrageous, decoupled from specific names or not.
