MI: After tax plan passes without direct checks, Democrats introduce 'nuclear option'

Democrats’ tax package passed the legislature Thursday, even as a key provision that would send $180 checks to taxpayers and prevent a permanent decrease in the state’s income tax inched closer to death.

The legislation will roll back most income taxes on retirement income, expand the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit five-fold, send $180 checks to Michiganders and create reoccurring deposits in a state economic incentive fund.

Democratic leaders celebrated the passage as a win....

As a potential backstop, Democrats introduced a proposal to change the Senate’s rules. It would allow them to vote for immediate effect by voice, as the House does, which in practice would enable the majority to get immediate effect for bills even if the votes aren’t there.

Senate leaders didn’t vote on the proposed rules change or commit to the change, but Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, D-Grand Rapids, intimated it’s on the table.

But Dems want to try again with the checks, possibly changing the rules to allow a voice vote.
