(15,399 posts)I'll be sorry to see him go (he was the first president I voted for, when he was running against Reagan), but hospice at home when he's still conscious is so much better emotionally for all involved than a hospital room.
Yes, that's my opinion.

(21,163 posts)I was a waitress at the hotel/restaurant the national reporters were staying at. A group of four sat at my table and ordered drinks. They likely had been at it for awhile. One reporter, who shall remain nameless, didn't like his martini and rudely sent it back. When I returned with the new drink, I set it down gently before him and said sweetly, "Here you go, Mr. Rather.' The other three roared with laughter. He wasn't Dan Rather. They didn't leave me a tip, but it was worth it.

(4,168 posts)length of life after entering hospice is around six months. That was in September, and Dad is still with us and with the help of hospice care his health is more stable.
His heart is past recovery, but he still enjoys life now that he doesn't feel as bad as he did before hospice began. Dad's 96.
But for my mother who had first had a stroke, then a heart attack caused by a-fib, she had less than three days in hospice care before she passed.
Whether Jimmy Carter's remaining days are very few or a bit longer, I hope they are ones filled with love, hope, and peace.

Guinea Worm Eradication Program
Jan. 24, 2023 | Guinea Worm Disease Reaches All-Time Low: Only 13* Human Cases Reported in 2022 »
Request for Pre-proposals
The Carter Center's Guinea Worm Eradication Program is requesting pre-proposals. Read the requirements »
Our Goal
Since 1986, The Carter Center has led the international campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease, working closely with ministries of health and local communities, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and many others.
https://www.cartercenter.org/health/guinea_worm/index.html
Guinea worm disease could become the second human disease in history, after smallpox, to be eradicated. It would be the first parasitic disease to be eradicated and the first disease to be eradicated without the use of a vaccine or medicine.

(38,637 posts)He is an honorable man, who voluntarily put it into a blind trust to avoid the appearance of impropriety. (Not ony that, but it was not sold until after he left office.)
The difference between him and Trump was not what political opponents forced (or didn't force) either to do, but the character of the men involved.

(58,283 posts)When we transferred our house to a family trust, the deed had to be charged from our name to the name of the trust.
Carter sold all his stock and transferred his interest in the farm to a blind trust he had no control over, unlike the trust Trump set up.
And yes, he wasn't made to do it in the sense that he was ordered by a court to do that, he felt compelled to do it to avoid any appearance of impropriety, because Republicans were already squealing about supposed conflicts of interest before he even won election. Then the GOP investigated for 6 months anyway.
But not a peep from the GOP about Trumps brazen conflicts of interest.
Ms. Toad
(38,637 posts)A trust has a lot of purposes. It is a way of parceling out different interests in the property, and of providing continuity of legal title even when the owners of the beneficial interest die. My parents' farmland is all in trust - they are the sole beneficiaries, and have full control of the property (they are both trustees and beneficiaries). Having property in the trust, for them, is benecial because it eliminates the need for a probate in a different state when they die. That is likely similar to yoru family trust.
The Carters' use of a trust is different - they did it for purposes of transferring the managerial control, but not the equitable interest in the property.
But neither of those are the same as selling. Selling transfers both the legal and equitable interests to another party (in exchange for a payment).

(1,230 posts)My father, of blessed memory, had hospice care at home with my mom, now also of blessed memory. My sisters and I took turns staying with them, so at least one of us was always there. He had the best of care and we had a year of grace with him before he died. He died peacefully, holding my moms hand, watching his beloved Badgers playing football. I treasure every moment our family had together.
President Carter has his faith, his family, and the love and respect of millions to comfort him as he makes this transition on his way home to glory over Jordan. Angels watch over him, his family, and all who love him.

(2,566 posts)I'm on the older end of Gen X. I remember seeing Nixon resign and crying "Why don't they just give him another chance!?" because he looked so sad.
I think I was 9 when Carter was elected. I was sad for Gerald Ford because he reminded me of my Grandpa. But I grew to love Jimmy Carter because he was a peanut farmer and he had a daughter my age.
I was sad when Carter lost because he was so gentle and kind. I never liked Reagan. By then I was 13 and knew a bastard when I saw one.

(22,590 posts)Saddened but not devastated. If this news was that he had passed suddenly, without any warning, that would have been a gut punch, to me anyway. This is more of a gentle reminder that a very old man is nearing the end of a life filled with kindness, love, and humanitarian service.
He's still with us for a while yet, and we have some time to prepare ourselves for the inevitable. Saying goodbye to him when the time comes will be incredibly hard, but we don't have to do it quite yet. In the meantime, let us celebrate this life that has been so long and so well-lived, and wish for him a peaceful departure.
