Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' call for a constitutional convention is a dog whistle for RWNJs

The RWNJ have been calling for a state constitutional convention to rewrite the US Constitution. The people pushing this plan are scary power-hungry, fringe conservatives.

When you can’t govern, just rely on publicity stunts — that is the mantra presumably of the presently very unserious Republican Party.

On Thursday, the nominal House Speaker Kevin McCarthy got in a photo op of his own, with a highly produced video of his jaunt to the southern border in Arizona with a delegation of Republican freshmen......

They’re all taking a page out of the Ron DeSantis playbook as he continues his own demagoguing photo ops to entertain MAGA voters, signing a bill allowing him to ship migrants across the country using Florida taxpayer money.

But DeSantis is much more private about a behind-the-scenes effort that is frighteningly serious. Last month, The Tampa Bay Times reported that he is appearing in radio ads — in Idaho, of all places — invoking Article 5 of the U.S. Constitution to call for a convention to amend the Constitution.

DeSantis’ stated goal is to get in an amendment imposing congressional term limits. But, as Puck News notes, "even this position has allowed fringe conservatives to dream of a day when they can use their control of state legislatures to fix all sorts of perceived federalist ills."

Everything in the US Constitution would be open for debate and revision.

Righ wingers would be able to fundamentally change the nation in nefarious ways.

This cannot happen or this country is finished.

When it is 2/3 of the states , the convention will be called. We cannot let this happen.

This is a link to a right wing activist convention site. It’s scary , but it gives you everything you need to know.

It is the states legislators that have the power. And those elections are virtually ignored entirely.

12. Those who believe in Democracy should have been pushing for National Popular Vote Compact

...we know is coming - this Constitutional Convention shit. The counter to that is the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. EVERY STATE RUN BY DEMOCRATS SHOULD BE SIGNING ON.

https://www.nationalpopularvote.com/written-explanation

EDIT: This threat from DeSantis and / OR the upcoming "Supreme" Court ruling which WILL (I have no doubt - call me a pessimist) GUT our Democracy by allowing state legislatures to choose POTUS thus tossing out the votes of their entire states such that only the legislature's votes count. Either way, our Democratic Republic is in VERY. GRAVE. DANGER.

Yet no one is paying attention. The media is largely silent on it. And that is how it will be permitted to happen. AFTER it happens people will be ANGRY & SHOCKED.

I do think much of the constitution needs to be revised. However, I don't see any changes happening for the foreseeable future.

DeSantis is starting his dive to the bottom to try to capture the crazy base.

What's interesting is the Republican candidates are going to have to go so far right to get the nominee that I don't see how they can ever pivot to the middle.

Basically, it shows how looneys and fascists want to amend the Constitution so they can abuse and imprison liberals. At the end, it shows the Stampede of Kooks who rush up the Capitol's steps because it's Open Season on the Constitution.
