Red-state America will lose more than Federal money if they get their 'divorce'.

The phrase 'Confederate money' has become a humorous term for a currency that is literally not worth the paper it's printed on.

During red-state America's first attempt at a national divorce, the South tried, like functioning nations, to have a freely-exchangeable currency. The problem was, they didn't have anyone possessing the necessary industrial skills of engraving and printing to be able to produce currency on a large scale.

In fact, for the first year of the Civil War, the Confederacy had to contract out currency production to a firm in the North, the National Bank Note Company of New York. The company printed one million dollars-worth of Confederate currency, and had it smuggled into the South across battle lines.

Currency bills needed the signature of the Treasurer in order to be considered authentic. Unfortunately, no one could figure out how to turn signatures into an engraved plate. So the Confederate government employed hundreds of harried clerks to copy the Treasurer's signature by hand onto hundreds of thousands of bills, completely obviating their utility as a tool against counterfeiting.

So, please proceed, red-staters. You don't want government or taxes? You don't get no money, either!

Fort Worth, Texas and Washington, D.C. The Bureau of Printing and Engraving are located there. Look on your various Bills of Legal tender. It will show where it was from as well as the signature of the current Treasury Secretary. I toured the Fort Worth facility in 2009. The recipes for the paints used, the engraving itself, how the actual bill is made are all TOP SECRET. That is to prevent counterfeit money from being circulated.

In such a " national divorce", the US Government would take control of the location in Fort Worth, not the state of Texas. Same would apply to all Federal buildings and Military facilities throughout "red" states. So such an idea would fail miserably.

Which is why the Confederacy failed during the American Civil War. The Confederate States had no idea as to how to develop what had already been in place that would be their own. MTG and her ilk are off their rockers if they think a "National Divorce" is the answer.

and that will have to be paid back in US dollars. Not allowed to use currency inflation to shirk your debts.

Great story on Confederate money by the way.

Imagine a scenario where those states seceded and ‘peace’ was achieved. How long would that peace last? Now the United States has a foreign power (that had gained independence through warfare) on its quite lengthy border - along with territories still being organized out west. Conflict appears inevitable. In the war that would be sure to follow, Union troops wouldn’t be in the midst of rebellious Americans, but ‘dirty furriners’ dehumanized by wartime propaganda.

unless I am way behind since yesterday the only person I know of who said this was MTG and honestly I do not think most people in red states take her seriously either. I am 100% sure nobody here on DU who lives in a red state is supporting this insane notion.

Let it go, we are your friends and are holding the fort as best as we can under some very difficult situations that many of you will never have to face in your state.

She is placing bombs out there, lets not respond to her. She is insane.

This state was bright blue when I moved here in 1993 … but the loss of the fairness doctrine and the rise of limpballs and Fux destroyed it.

They had to do a LOT of printing as the war went on.

I believe I read once that a Thanksgiving turkey in November, 1864 was around 150 Confederate dollars.

Inflation was rampant in the Confederacy, especially when it became obvious they were going to lose the war. Also, there was a high rate of counterfeiting.

The more northerly blue states would have another option in the case of red state secession. Political and currency union with Canada.
