This is such a common story. How many of us once had "liberal" friends who turned into something much more similar to RW monsters? Probably your HOA president was never actually liberal, even if sharing various goals of the Democratic Party.
I mention that because it's extremely common to confuse people who behave il-liberally with liberals just because in a two-party democracy they've been voting for some of the same things liberals do, while actually gut reacting a lot more similar to RW illiberals than liberals. This gives a very warped view of what liberalism and liberals are.
Also, some illiberal types are LW authoritarians, il-liberal as hell plus admiring of dictatorial leadership and eager for an authoritarian strongman leader to give their loyalty to -- your "dictator" president also?!
In any case, I'm guessing your president was like so many who may have ignorantly assumed he or she was on the liberal democracy side, albeit a bad fit, until this era showed maybe they didn't have to be stuck with what weenie liberal majorities wanted. They could stick their own choices to them instead.
