GOP Politician Uses Polish Slur In Speech Claiming Party Isn't Bigoted

AMinnesota state senator is getting criticized after a speech where he claimed the state’s Republican Party isn’t bigoted ― and included a slur against Polish people in the process.

During a hearing about potential legislation that would allow undocumented immigrants to get ID cards and Class D driver’s licenses, Sen. Mark Johnson (R), the Senate Minority Leader, argued that GOP lawmakers had good-faith objections to the bill, according to the Independent.

“There are holes in this bill,” Johnson said, while insisting he wasn’t attacking any particular demographic groups. “We’re not calling groups any names. What we’re saying is we need to protect Minnesotans.”

-snip-

“Doesn’t matter what your race, your color, your creed, Norwegian, Polack, Somalian, you name it. But folks, we have concerns about this — and yet when we bring those concerns up on this floor, tonight we were called white national racists,” he said.

Used carefully among friends belonging to the respective group. Used as a slur by an "outsider" could result in unpleasantness.

Calling a large black man the N word..? NOT advised!

Calling a large Polish-American steel worker the P word..?
Really not advised!

and I remember EVERYBODY who was polish used that word in jokes all the time, but I've never heard it used outside those circles, and I always understood it to be "off limits", like your example.

in Chicago used that word regularly. I never knew any who were offended by it. They also told the best Polish jokes.

50 years old, dad's family all speaks a little Polish, grandma was fluent. Had no idea that was a slur. Been using it my whole life.

I've been saying forever that, in the realm of public service, intelligent people want someone who is as smart or smarter than they are. Stupid people want someone just like themselves: stupid. It's a way of pretending that something worthless has actual value.

It's a Polish word and it means "Polish person".

But to include it in a sentence trying to show that you're not prejudiced is poor judgment at best. It seems that Repubs have forgotten how to do politics.

The self owns they commit every day are hilarious
