I would like to ask members of the DU community for a big favor. It has to do with a legal case in Unadilla, NY, where a man has violated an order of protection -- reportedly several times by phone and text, before engaging in a vicious assault on a young lady at her place of employment. He was attempting to stab her neck with a key, before a citizen intervened.
The person who asked me to examine this case is my cousin, who was shot with his son in 2014 by an intexicated, off-duty law enforcement officer. The son died, and my cousin continues to have issues from being shot. DUers contacted court officials when the thug was hoping for bail.

This coming Monday afternoon, my cousin and I will be attending the next court hearing for Jeff Bullis, the thug that attacked the young lady in Unadilla. I am catching up on more details than have been reported by the area media. One of the people I am in communication with is a local Justice of the Peace, who is very familiar with Bullis and this case. She has said it is important for citizens to contact the District Attorney's office, and request that Bullis is fully charged, tried, convicted, and incarcerated.
Bullis had no respect for the court's order of protection. His violations of that court order increased, up to his assaulting the young lady. It is my impression that if the legal system does not hold him fully accountable, he will continue to escalate the intensity of his violence. And there is really only one "next step."
The Otsego County District Attorney's office does not have a public e-mail address. Hence, I am hoping people will call D.A. John Muehl's office at 607-547-6464. Thank you for your consideration.

(75,210 posts)cases of violence do not always get treated the way that they should. Otherwise, for example, this thug would be in a cell waiting to go to trial. I would not ask if it were not important.

I really appreciate it. I know this is one case in a small village, but it is important for those in the court system to know that there have to be serious consequences.

(151,761 posts)What would you recommend that we say to the D.A's office?
Do we mention how we found out about this situation? Do we quote you?
Do we identify ourselves and our location?
Any guidelines you can give would be very helpful!
H2O Man
(75,210 posts)I would suggest identifying one's name and location, the name "Jeff Bullis" and the case in Unadilla, NY, and ask for a serious prosecution. As you and I are old friends, feel free to use my name, or say that you read about it on the internet.
Both judges and prosecutors do take note when the public politely requests violent thugs face serious prosecution. Back years ago, the DU response made a strong impression.

(75,210 posts)Violence in our area is getting way out of control. The majority of it that I am aware of is men assaulting women. It is important for the public to take a stand, locally, regionally, and nationally. It is obviously not the only type of violence in our society. But in this case, I do think the young lady's life is at risk. The thug was attempting to inflict a serious injury when the third person stopped him.

(3,497 posts)New York's system for those restraining/ orders of protection is very weak. Statutory time limit, very high bar to trigger a violation, whereas NJ has a tough process to get one but they are presumed permanent one instated.

(75,210 posts)I agree on NYS's system being weak. It's a real problem when shitheads have no respect for a court order.

(75,210 posts)I have one friend who said she can't call while at work. I think the office has an answering machine, and it is worth filling up.
I think that as a human being, I have a duty to speak up in cases like this. While I do not know the young lady, I am familiar with the thug's family. Thus, I think incarceration is the only option.

(346 posts)Unfortunately women are most at risk for assault right after they take out a restraining order on their abbusive SO.
H2O Man
(75,210 posts)It is extremely high risk at that point. And this guy has escalated in his violating the court order. I've seen this play out too many times. Far too many.
Thank you!

(17,433 posts)Just gave them a ring. Said I had a acquaintence up in Ithaca, and heard about the Bullis case, his order of protection violations, then escalated to outright attack.
I said bc I kind of think this - that if he'd had a gun that attack would been (Life Forbid!) a kill shot.
So trial, conviction, prison and that he should be in jail right now.
I don't hear that well (cause I got a live person) and I always get nervous even when calling my Rep's or Senator's office - still(!) after all these decades though I'm better at it usually now.
She said something about him having 3 (charges?) cases against him but I missed the rest.
I'm sorry about what your cousin has endured, but glad you are giving him support. I hope justice will prevail, and she will have a sense of relief after having gone through more of an ordeal.
Good on you for spreading the information on this situation.

The thug was trying to puncture the young lady's throat with a key when the third person grabbed him. I'm not sure how intelligent he is, but I know it is relatively easy to end someone with a pencil to the throat. (I've only taught my daughters that as a means of self defense in the most extreme circumstances.)

(17,433 posts)(later last night reading your request) as in I was thinking this monster trying get her on the side of her neck like the blood vessel. It didn't even occur to me about the front of her throat. Gah! Expletives(!!!!!) - yeah, that wouldn't have been that hard (not easy, but) there are certain vunerable points.
(and keep that pencil defense in a mental draw)
Let us know about what happens Mon.
Anyway, if you need us again phone wise further on just let us know.

(75,210 posts)I've taught all four of my kids self-defense. To never start a fight. Avoid one if possible. And end it quick if there is no other way.
Years ago, my younger son was walking on campus one evening, when he saw a guy slapping his girlfriend. My son told him to stop, and the guy pointed out he had two friends with him. The three against one thing. Poor choice of words. My son didn't tell me about it, but the girl's father got ahold of me to thank me and my son. So I asked my boy the next time I saw him. He said it was nothing .... he remembered the advice I gave for such a situation. The kid's two friends didn't want to see their buddy's eyes popped out. Works most every time.
I might suggest the young lady in the current case varry a can of Black Flag that sprays 50 feet, and a good lighter, in her purse.
I was talking with an old friend, who has known me since we were kids. Back in my day, I did get my hand sliced by a guy who slapped his girlfriend at a party. I warned him to stop. He drew a knife, hence the sliced hand! But he ended up an unconscious lump on the ground. These days, being old, I've had to downgrade to using the legal system. Ha!

(75,210 posts)I was just on with a couple lawyers, discussing the case. And wanted to get back to DU with an update.
He entered a "not guilty" plea on each of the eight charges. The next date is in March, and the trial scheduled for April. I believe the thug is on the street now. Crazy.
His attorney requested a longer delay. No doubt he will look to get his client a plea deal. I am, of course, opposed to any deal.
