This happened at the beginning of the Trump administration. The point is, when Republicans are in power not only do they deregulate everything in sight, particularly industries that were regulated to protect the public, but they BRAG about it. Then, somehow, when the shit hits the fan it's still the Democrats fault.

But having exact examples is useful evidence, for "the record" I guess.

Otherwise they say "See? *That* particular regulation was over-reach" and feel justified because they somehow saved jobs and the economy or some nonsense.

They don't really regulate things so it is a good place to put any of the anti-tfg shit that we have learned in the last several years

Although it would take much more to equal the de-regulation that took place during the Reagan (HW) and W (Cheney) administrations.

voters give them the power. Without fail. (Wish the illiberal LWers who claimed Democrats were just the same as Republicans had added a little asterisk and caveat on that. Just to give their targeted victims a sporting chance.)

The people in their wisdom gave the GOP/RW powers a GREAT DEAL of power in 2016, and they went aggressively to their destructive work. On top of that, tRump set himself to maliciously erase amap of Obama's legacy.

most major accomplishment was showing thru Citizens United in 2010...........Their true goal is to take us back to the Robber Baron's Age, and the Gilded Age segment of our history..........And Citizens United allowed the Republicans the beginning of cementing their goal.

Until CU is repealed, they will continue to cascade toward every goal on their long list............

Get ready for the: Corporate Fascist Tyranny, to replace our constitution and the U.S. Democracy......

https://www.npr.org/2023/02/23/1158972561/east-palestine-train-derailment-ntsb-preliminary-report-wheel-bearing

As the train approached East Palestine, a wheel bearing on its 23rd railcar rapidly overheated, its temperature soaring to more than 250 degrees Fahrenheit above the ambient outdoor temperature of 10 degrees.

The overheating triggered an alarm, which caused the train's engineer to immediately apply the brakes to bring the train to the stop. An automatic emergency braking system also came into effect.

...

On hearing the alarm, the engineer "responded immediately" to begin bringing the train to a stop, Homendy said, but as the train decelerated, the wheel bearing failed.

Norfolk Southern safety guidelines do not require train operators to take action until wheel bearings reach 170 degrees Fahrenheit above ambient temperature, the report said. Once a critical level of 200 degrees Fahrenheit is reached, Norfolk Southern requires its train operators to stop a train immediately and remove the affected car from the train.
More frequent sensors may have helped

But with 19 miles between detectors, the wheel bearing heated beyond the train operators' ability to stop the train safely, the NTSB said....

Stiffen the regulations on how long the wheel bearings can be in use?

Anybody know?

This may be an exercise in futility, since I’d guess the railroad lobby will be dead set against any upgrades (“do you know how much that’s gonna COST???).

Who lives in an industrial area, I’ve watched these trains almost double in size and distance they need to stop. I have friends who work for a large railroad corporation who literally is on call 24/7 even when he has run 12-16 hours. They’ve went from 3 to 2 to 1 person running the local lines. They have radio controlled engines at the middle or ends of the monstrously long trains and the track controllers may literately be hundreds of miles away and not familiar with the areas they run in. PROFITS BABY, PROFITS are their only goal.
