I went viral today!
Channel 7 in Los Angeles, (my old TV station), posted my photo of the Hollywood Sign with the snow covered mountains in Los Angeles. At last count it has seventy thousand hits and sixteen thousand shares. Of course, I forgot to put my name on it.
As I often do, I grabbed a camera while I was leaving to walk the dog. This was the view about four blocks from home. ![]() Here is the link to ABC7's Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=583509857250986&set=a.334066472195327

26. I know that exactly, we lived in the La Villa Marina townhomes, between the Marina Expressway and
Lincoln, right north of Ballona Creek (the wetlands were between the creek and us, with Culver Blvd bisecting it) and across the street from Cedars-Sinai in the other direction. I so miss that whole area, Mar Vista, Palms, Culver City, Playa Vista and Playa Del Rey, Venice (only to a point with Venice Beach, lol, we preferred Dockweiler Beach, so much less crowded), etc.

67. no sure what point this comment intends to make
Are you saying there is a probability that I grew up in a slum? Perhaps I am reading too much into it.
In the positive side, I also am certain that the comment would not have been made if we were in a face to face situation, as, for the record, I am a mixed race, part black female. I have a white Swedish father (my wife and I have lived in Stockholm now for several years), and a Bajan, (i.e. from Barbados) multiracial mum. Of course, unless you are familiar with my background (which I have shared on DU many times, but you only joined DU in mid 2022, so may not have encountered me elaborating on it before) you would not know that, so I am sure there was no intended bias. I grew up in South Kensington, London, btw, which, I am happy to report, does not have any 'Projects' aka, in British parlance, council estates (social housing) that are often situated in problematic, vulnerable areas. A notable exception, and somewhat near to my area of west London would be Churchill Gardens in Pimlico (Pimlico is directly to the southeast of Belgravia, one of the most expensive neighbourhoods on the planet), but that area is now overall very posh (most of the Westminster area has been for centuries, it is where Buckingham Place, et al. are located), and there have been multiple (still ongoing) controversies over the estate for decades, as developers want to demolish large parts of it and turn it into extremely high end housing. I was born in Los Angeles (I am the only US citizen in my family, my wife included), but my parents moved back to London when I was a young toddler. I had always wanted to go back and live in L.A. for a spell, and I was able to do just that whilst I read for a masters degree at uni there. cheers, Cel ![]() |

73. Oh, Celerity, I'm so sorry to have offended you in any way.
I was trying to make a sarcastic joke about how lovely your house was. 'Projects' was an extremely poor choice of words, and very sorry I used it. Certainly not directed at you at all.
I enjoy your posts and comments. Smart and right on the money. I'll try and be more sensitive and less of a wise ass in the future. (If I had a nickel for every time I said that...) And I'd love to meet you someday, just to give you a h.....shake your hand. Thanks for being so nice. rs |

78. aww, thanks so much for the kind & explanatory reply, I too am at fault for reading too much into it
I hope I did not offend you either, as that was not my intent.
Those condos are great, but are now crazy overpriced (as is all of LA tbf). Those pics also (of course, as they are from a realtor site) glam them up, and there are non fully-rehabbed units that are not so nice on the inside. The La Villa Marina development was built in the mid 1960s to 1970 or so (our unit was built in 1966 if memory serves) as a number of smaller complexes that were named for Italian cities (Villa Spezia, Villa Romano, Villa Napoli, Villa San Cipriano, etc etc, and some French cities as well, ike Villa San Tropez, Villa Toulon, etc), and some are the worse for wear. I just am a huge fangirl of mid century modern architecture and design (deffo not so common in London or Stockholm, lol, albeit there is more in the UK than Sweden). |

85. You're very sweet, thank you 🙂!
Now I'm curious about what one of those units would cost in today's market. House prices and rents here in Florida have been insane in the last few years, but nothing like California. A studio apartment in Orlando is $1,600 a month. Insurance on a house near the coast just doubled to $5,600 a year. A young family doesn't stand a chance.

96. too much, lol
1 to 1.5 million usd or so now, depending on size and location and level of work done.
The have at least doubled in price in the last in the last 8 to 10 years, and have went up 500 to 700 plus per cent I do believe since the 1990s when my parents bought the unit (and kept as an investment after they moved back to London, they have let (rented) it out for ages) we lived in when I was born. My wife and I lived in it whilst I was going to uni there (she worked full time), and yes, we paid them rent (and paid all utilities), albeit not market value, lol, we got the fam discount. ![]() Our HOA was super chill, but some of the complexes' HOAs in La Villa Marina are quite the little condo commandos (par for the course from all I have seen of America, including reading tales of woe on DU from some posters, although Swedish bostadsrättsförening, i.e. condo boards, can be every bit as crazy and nasty, the Swedish rental/ownership system us so complex and maddening for so many,, especially our rental system (we own here thank fuck), which is INSANE, not at ALL like the US or the UK, it is a massive weak part of the entire country's underpinnings). My cousin on mummy's side now lives in the LA unit, after she sold her Santa Monica home that she got half of in her divorce settlement (a whole other nightmare story that was, arfff). |

I had brought a bathing suit, thinking I would be close to the beach. I guess that the 2' long icicles hanging off the roof at the airport, framed with palm trees, should have been a clue of what was to come. Don't ever judge temps on palm trees, I have learned.

of the tennis ball I brought as a play toy. My sneakers fell apart before I had a chance to buy boots. Good thing I traveled with my crazy glue in my repair travel kit. It held them together temporarily. My little dog was from San Diego and never saw snow before. I'm glad I packed doggie sweaters and I'm glad she was 7 pounds so I just carried her, tucked into the new winter jacket I had to buy too.

42. Fabulous picture, thanks! Beautiful and a gift to all who see it.
For those not from L.A., the tallest mountains are the San Gabriels, which divide the Mediterranean-climate L.A. area from the Mojave Desert on their other side, and the lower range in front of them is the Verdugos. We lived in West Hollywood long ago (still miss it!) and then near Pasadena in the sloping valley between the two ranges.
Used to be the San Gabriels were covered in white for months every winter and spring, the postcard picture with people strolling Hollywood Boulevard in sun dresses and shorts. ![]() |

47. Cool pic, visual contrast! Congrats! ...
I "blinked" though; thinking is that snow on those mountains? 😄
I guess because of the palm trees in front plus being LA re Hollywood sign. But why wouldn't tall mountains have snow esp this time of year. |

65. Any lawyer out there.......
Isn't it possible that if someone uses your photo, either you have to agree to allow it being used for free, giving them a signed release, or get paid??????? And regardless, you have to be given credit below the photograph.??????
Seems to me that photo will become an iconic photo and should be worth some money. And if the photographer doesn't challenge the publisher, then that sets a precedent and anyone can use it for free?????????? I have no idea, and have zero legal knowledge. Just wondering |

However, I don't think any of that is true.
I usually put my name on my photos, but I never imagined this one would be so popular. However, I normally put it at the bottom of the frame where it is easily cropped out anyway. |

99. Maybe, but
you should always request they at least give you a credit in the caption on the Photo............
Decades ago, I sent a picture to the Denver Post. They had me sign a release before they would even use it. I also worked for a fair sized Corporation decades ago. A young MBA took a picture he saw, and used it in an advertisement for our corporation........... A week later, after the ad ran in the paper, our CEO received a bill for a thousand dollars for the "one time use of the photograph," from the photographer. The CEO told accounting to issue a check immediately, and he also wrote a hand written letter to the photographer apologizing for using his photo. He told me that he was glad the guy didn't bill us ten grand, because he would be obligated to pay it. The CEO told me that if it went to court it would be a slam dunk legally for the Photographer........ Like I said, I am not an attorney, and only have these similar experiences....... |

115. All true.
In this case, there is a record of the TV station publishing the photo on Facebook. I worked at that station for thirty one years, so I doubt that I would have much trouble getting them to back me up if I needed them.

106. And if you didn't want to go through the hassle,
a set of six (or a dozen?) postcards would be wonderful to give as gifts. I originally thought: “ooooooh, notecards!” The kind with no inscriptions on the inside. But that would require envelopes to go with the notecards and it might be a little bit of a hassle.
Heck, you could contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and let them know what you have. It’s such a gorgeous photo - if I worked at the Chamber, I think I’d want some! If they were to like it well enough, you might really have something there! How would it look, blown up to poster-size? Or a framed 8x10? T-shirts? Coffee cups? Coasters? Place mats? Screen savers? Book and notebook covers? Or blown up to the size of an actual wall cover? I’ve seen that with scenic wallpaper of the redwoods. This shot would work, too. |

105. You can't.
As I understand it, I own the photo whether I copyright it or not. Unfortunately, people steal photos all the time and get away with it. Not too many people pay the consequences for this particular theft of intellectual properties. I almost always put my name on my pics, but even that is no guarantee they won't be stolen. In this case, I never thought this pic would be so popular. The damage is probably done.
