She claims to be a good Christian. Lent started last week with Ash Wednesday. It is customary for Christians to give up something for Lent because it is a period for self reflection, self sacrifice, and spiritual growth.
It used to be that only Roman Catholics gave up something for Lent, but Protestant denominations have also started doing this, including getting ashes on Ash Wednesday.
So, what should MTG give up?
I suggest she give up harassing and screaming at people whose politics are different from hers. Think she could last from now until Easter without harassing people?

Then she could whine about being harassed on social media, too. It would make her day to have something to whine about and make our day to see it bothering her.
When she objects, tell her she is not a good Christian.

Obviously Im not including all 40 but most are things we are all guilty of doing to ourselves and our loved ones. It is a different view of looking at giving something up for Lent

I admit that I am guilty of using the occasion to challenge a hypocrite's claim to being Christian.

(25,355 posts)it was not the custom but is being encouraged now. The Protestant denomination that I now belong to did not do it in the past, but is now encouraging it, too. Neither one makes it a requirement, but they do discuss and encourage it. A few other denominations are also doing this now, along with dispensing ashes on Ash Wedenesday, which they did not used to do.
I am wondering about the 20% that you mentioned. The ELCA Lutherans and the PCUSA Presbyterians are now encouraging the practice and some Methodists, too. Episcopalians do it. Those are mainline Protestant denominations. If you put them all together, along with the few Evangelicals who now encourage it as a part of spiritual meditation, I think that it would be more than 20% of Protestants. Not a majority, but more than 20%.
Anyway, the point is that it gives MTG less of an excuse to say that it would not apply to her.
