(26,257 posts)republicans somewhat, being that they've always been a 'drag' on the rest of us. And by the way, I've been to probably hundreds of drag shows over 40 years or so, I've yet to see a show where there were children there. So again, republicans are beating the drums of doom over NOTHING. They are lying to us again w/ a non-issue.

(23,694 posts)Victor, Victoria is on my permanent top movie list. It is pure perfection. The script, casting, physical comedy - everything is awesome.
I really hated that Preston did not get an Oscar but he was up against Lou Gosset and Charles Durning.
If you have never seen this movie, find it and watch it.
It is Blake Edwards' masterpiece.

(4,964 posts)James Garner and Julie Andrews had great chemistry going back to "The Americanization of Emily." Watching Robert Preston's character as the comedic inflection point was sheer joy. I think Mr. Preston was allowed to go off script and improvise. He seemed to be having a great time in performing.

(5,370 posts)I have had five (so far) male acquaintances turn out to be predators. None were clergy. All were married. Four were fathers. I was shocked when each was arrested. You can't tell. They look like anybody else. The only thing they had in common was that they "loved kids" and spent a lot of time around them. It's gotten to the point where I get sick to my stomach if I hear that someone "loves kids."

(4,044 posts)Gotta say, I didn't enjoy it all. I was expecting comedy and fashion, but the show was nothing but rigorous erotic dancing.
It wasn't sweet. It wasn't funny. It was not striptease, but was a kind of very physical, often gymnastic dancing, while people put dollars in the performers' skin-tight and glittery outfits.
Other people said they enjoyed the show. But no one seems to want to go back.
I have to say, I would not have enjoyed this show if it consisted of actual women, either.
So, if my experience is any indication of what a drag show is, it is very different than the scenes from the comedic movies and TV shown above. The only one acting seductively is Bugs Bunny!
There are a number of Bugs Bunny eps when he wears drag. My favorite Bugs episode of all time is "The Rabbit of Seville."
Elmer Fudd is singing that he wants to "eat a rabbit." So Bugs puts on drag, and dances while singing "What do you want with a rabbit? Can't you see that I'm much sweeter? I'm your little senorita."

(4,044 posts)Before the first act, they gave people a chance to acquire $1 bills. (For example, to cash in a $20.)
And as a dancer would pass a seat, people would put the dollars in the outfits.
Some of these dancers were doing these spread-eagled somersaults. Impressive, but not interesting.
Yes, similar to strip. But, the dancers stayed in their costumes.
This was the place ...

(4,044 posts)Many people were filming the performers. The lead person, who seemed to be a big man with a wig and very real-looking breasts, encouraged filming and photos.
All of the performers were muscular, super-fit men. Yet, some could also really pass as women.
It was a very hard-R-rated environment. But, not X-rated. Not for kids.

(110,261 posts)I never much enjoyed that type of humor.
When men acted in drag in those roles, it always felt to me like they were caricaturing women -- making fun of them. So, it just wasn't funny to me.
But everyone has their own sense of humor. Obviously the bans are ridiculous.

(2,118 posts). . . feels about women by the way they approach drag. With Monty Python, I sensed a kindness and respect there in their play acting as the opposite sex. Sure, they were poking fun, but they more often fully skewered certain male British types of personas.
Many, many decades ago, there was a player on Saturday Night Live who did female characters. I couldn't shake the sense that his dislike of women was channeled into his performance. I also got the feeling that this actor was Gay, and I do know that Gay men do not generally hate women and that a dislike of women is NOT why they are Gay.

All the female characters in Shakespeare's plays were performed by young guys in drag.

(610 posts)... As You Like It. The layers of drag in this one is surreal.
Where a young male actor (originally) would portray the female character Rosalind, who ran away with her 'female' friend (another boy actor) to the forest from some rotten nobles. Rosalind dressed as a boy to protect her friend, and found the trees adorned with terrible bits of verse extolling her as Rosalind. Curious, she tracked down the doggeral writer who was enamored of her from when he ran into her at court before she fled. She then convinces the young lover who does not recognize her, to woo her (well, 'him' ) as if 'he' was Rosalind in order to get pointers on upping his romance game.
So we have an actual boy, portraying a girl, who was dressed as a boy, and 'pretending' to be the girl.
I saw a PBS presentation of it filmed in outdoor locations, and loved it.
Eta: was probably the BBC 1978 TV version, but couldn't find it on youtube. I did find a colorized 1936 rendition.

(3,457 posts)I was with my then girlfriend and my two really good friends (husband and wife) from Tampa. We ate and drank well wandering around the French Quarter (as I've done dozens of times in previous years). As our buzzes grew we were looking for something to do out of the ordinary, so to speak. Only about 40 feet away was a theater (bar) that had drag shows. We hemmed and hawed and then we all came to a consensus. What the fuck! Let's do it and see what it's all about. We all had a thoroughly great time. It was fantastic. Two of the dancers came to our table and thanked us for being enthusiastic (alcohol) as we were. It was my first dedicated drag show and we all had a great time.
I wasn't accosted, I wasn't hit on, I wasn't injured, I wasn't freaked out. It was a very good time. Everyone in the crowd was just as enthusiastic and enjoyed themselves too.
To me, they're just another segment of our fucked up society that's easily marginalized and exploited for political gain. Our country is really descending into a pathetic state.

(23,694 posts)One of the best! Watching those three guys is a true delight.
They all appeared to be having a blast playing those characters, too
I have been to 2 drag shows. One was a drag beauty contest at a Stonewall Democrats fundraiser. It was so much fun but not appropriate for kids due to language and some fairly suggestive moves. The gowns were great and everyone was having enormous fun,
The other was back in 1967 when I was in college. One of the fraternities put on a "She-Male" contest as a fundraiser. I can't imagine anyone doing this now, unless it was a true drag show putting on a themed performance. & yes I know the name is awful, but this was the middle 60s. It was hysterical, mostly because every one of the men ran it to the hilt- The guys really looked like they were channeling Flip Wilson. Their costumes were very inventive and they were all having fun with it. I can still see in my mind's eye one of our star basketball players decked out in a very preppy outfit (skirt, sweater, hose & heels. He was already 6'5"
He won by the way. He went on to play a few years of pro and then was an executive at KFC
Who would have thought that little Methodist liberal arts college would allow such a thing!!! Statistically at least one of them could have been gay but this was after all the 1960s in Kentucky and it was rare to meet anyone who was out.
Anyone here ever attend a Womanless Wedding? These used to be very popular back in the 50s in rural areas - as fundraisers. Again the guys put on a crazy show, never realizing they could have been inadvertently shaming their own friends, relatives or children who were still in the closet.
