When Trump says "I am your retribution," he's channeling Yahweh, God of the Old Testament.
But when god purportedly said "Vengeance is mine," he meant that his followers should not commit violence; he would take care of retribution.
But Christianity has been so perverted for the MAGA crowd, Trump's declaration that he is "retribution" gives license to his followers to commit acts of extreme violence.

Democrats will need to put aside petty differences and mobilize like never before.

(10,252 posts)Since Constantine the Great made Christianity the state religion, it has waged countless wars on pagans, labeled any deviation from their dogma as heretical, murdered and tortured people, grifted for money, stolen land.
But actually practicing what Jesus taught -- eh not so much. Go read the Sermon and the Mount and see for yourself that many who call themselves Christians are just hypocrites.

(4,089 posts)Curiously, in fighting heresy, the church defeated the Gnostic point of view.
The Gnostic teaching said that God could be known; therefore orthodox Christianity is officially agnostic (opposed to Gnostic).

(10,252 posts)Gnostics believed that one could have personnel knowledge of god without the intercession of a priest. You didn't need a priest to hear your confession and absolve you.

(1,182 posts)Jesus the kid, pushes a playmate to his death from a roof. A crowd gathers, mortified, but Jesus just laughs and resurrects his friend from the dead!
In another story, Jesus secretly conspires with his half-brother Judas to sell him out. Seems rather heroic on Judas' part, doesn't it? To be reviled for all eternity for something his brother put him up to.
Heck, the Gnostic Origin Story depicts the Garden of Eden as a false paradise, created by the Devil, with the Serpent being the True God, leading them out of their befuddlement. Indeed, it was the Gnostics who interpreted the concept of sin as being merely ignorance of the Truth. That seems like a pretty insightful idea right there, and creates a sharper divide between the Old and New (so-called) Testaments.
And remember, the Gnostic Gospels in the Nag Hammadi Library predate anything the Vatican has let us know they have.
All these other "gospels" were deemed heretical by the early Church, and the Gnostics ruthlessly stamped out. Which is why these sacred papyri were hidden in a cave for over a millennia.

(26,019 posts)decided on Christianity as the official religion of the Empire. The new religion had been spreading for a few centuries and he wanted a unified empire under one religious philosophy - one official form of it to unify the people. That's what happens when there are no lines drawn between religion and government.
In Roman times, there was no such thing as separating the two. Prior to Christisnity, Romans were expected to sacrifice to the gods on certain occasions for the good of the Empire, to keep the gods satisfied. It was civic duty and people who refused were punished. Punishing "heretics" after Christianity became the official religion was a continuation of attitudes from pre Christian times.

(10,252 posts)Christianity is a Roman invention. Constantine called for the 1st Convention of Nicea in 325AD to formulate the dogma of the Christian Church. That was when the dogma of the Trinity was made official doctrine, and those who didn't accept it were labeled heretics.

(13,018 posts)tV this AM and a Morning Mega Church was on. Before I could dive over the couch to the remote the preacher was talking about the loving God they should follow who build his kingdom on Love and Wisdom. With a straight face. Before I hit the floor with remote in hand, I started laughing like hell.
Love and Wisdom!!!! Like the second coming of trump. All love, all brains. And then the pastor had the money plate passed around.
Fools and their money.

(17,757 posts)It was targeting a specific audience of his loyal cult who would have been experiencing orgasams of joy at his words. Trump is still recruiting and inspiring an "army," and he is doing it in full view of the world. Sales of assault rifles will probably spike next week. Now, the next question is what will DeSantis do to trump Trump's speech? There is no longer any pretense that Republicans believe that the voice of the people is relevant. Within their party there is a race to the bottom, and the rank and file either approve or are willing to turn their heads because the Republican Party is giving them license to hate again, and plenty of targets to focus on. Pick from the menu to suit your personal taste...
As a child of the 50s and 60s, it absolutely breaks my heart to see all of the social gains that were made from the 60 through the 80s are now being destroyed, state by state. MAGA will be the death of the nation.
The Justice Department has it, within their power, to put the breaks on the runaway Fascist train by simply doing the right thing, yet all we see is delay after delay. I believe that it is probably already too late to bring Trump to trial before, "for the good of the nation" the felony investigations and possible prosecutions against him will be suspended due to the impending elections. If Trump was indicted yesterday, with all of the likely delays, the case would not go to trial before the election witching hour. Trump may have already won the battle of the clock.

So I know ho they must feel, how they need to dissociate themselves from Maga OT crowd which must be even more runious in their eyes than the normal grifters (e.g., TV megachurch preachers with private jets), because the Maga types will effect their youth, either turning them off to Christianity or seducing them to the Maga-brand. (The normal grifters only steal their cash, though it may turn their youth, those who hate hypocrisy, away as well.

(7,794 posts)enjoy committing those acts. Those who consider themselves society's outliers, the non-participants, would gladly use violence to let their fellow citizens know they're demanding recognition. Thinking that it's about time they got some "respect".
While we've been sitting back, watching this awful spectacle of the misguided unfold, perhaps a bit smugly, their confused frustrations and perceived petty slights have borne a resentment that many of them long to act upon. The ongoing prosecution of the insurrectionists does not deter them, probably because there has been too little prosecution and too late.
Therre's no likely use trying to count on the GOP to get a handle on this violence either. As they get their comeuppance and while conceding their long-term part in this debacle, I'm afraid we'll still all pay. Really, we already have.
