It seems to me they have reached the point they feared all along.
At one time, the CPAC convention was the premier event for "conservatives" all across America. Now, it has become nothing more than a small gathering for a cult leader.
Republican fears have become a reality. Their Party has been successfully divided between the Old Guard and the Ultra-MAGA Republicans. They are now two Parties.
This could be the beginning of the end of the Party that began about 170 years ago? It is difficult to see how they glue themselves back together?
They knew it was quicksand when they stepped in it, but they just couldn't help themselves.

(3,035 posts)and probably many local. While CPAC has faltered and there is more intra party name calling and drama, in the end, in general elections they will coalesce around the guns, god, small government and anti abortion candidate. Now they may, given their divisions, field more damaged and extreme candidates that give swing voters pause as we saw in 2022, but that does not equal the dissolution of their party.

(3,336 posts)McCarthy won't bring issues to the house floor other than promised issues that will also highlight his weakness as speaker. Thus muting to some degree the apparent power of the MTG ilk. A possible backstop against crazy.
Second: With crazy now somewhat muted, the pit of vipers draws closer together as the primary approaches and are actually in the same pit for the general.

(36,509 posts)The battle of the party isn't over its soul, it has none, but over its infrastructure. Bernie Sanders was right back in 2015 when he said that there are only two ways to the White House and one is through the Democratic Party and the other is through the Republican Party. That's true of most congressional and state seats as well. No other parties have the infrastructure these two have.
All repub voters, moderates or cult, have been brainwashed to believe the worst republican is still better than any democrat. I see this attitude in the moderate repubs I know.

(4,037 posts)It seems apparent that other than TFG and his ilk spewing endless bullshit to continue indoctrinating deplorables, the GOP has no direction at all. There has not been one standout rational Republican member in Congress who has taken a firm stand against the destruction of our norms or their radical wing of idiots. Doing the right thing has been relegated to the dust bins of the model T.
Let them wallow in their desperation, evidenced by the mental midgets the likes of MTG, Boebert, Gohmert, and on and on. This sub-species of humanity must be constantly exposed for their fascist abnormalities and radical philosophies. Constant exposure in the media of their anti American rhetoric is badly needed. Ive begun to see us swinging back. Long overdue
Now if we could have an federal indictment on TFG, not just local lawsuits, perhaps we can get TFG and his similarly minded ilk to slither down the sewer that they have crawled out of. Then there is Garland. I dont care how many are upset by criticisms of our Atty. General because we each have an opinion, and I HOPE MINE IS WRONG. Unfortunately all I see now is a very dented can being kicked down the road. Do you really think that with the upcoming election that Smith or Garland will prevail?

(673 posts)Remember that during Watergate, Special Prosecutors Cox and Jaworski did yeoman work. The DOJ issued 69 indictments and obtained 48 convictions. All of the big fish, except Trickie Dickie, went to jail.

(6,655 posts)No party remaining, no policies, no platform, no plans. No one who represents their constituents or does any work for them. Maybe a few old guys who still truckle to the Uber-rich, otherwise all preening grievance and violence.
Side note: Out canvassing yesterday in Wisconsin for Judge Janet, heard more than one person say, "I'm never voting Republican again in my life."

With the puppeteer Pootin (as well as MurKKKan Billionaires) controlling all the strings of trump and McCarthy. I hope the tangled web of strings choke every damn one of them out. Using their hand made gallows. Shame to waste that craftsmanship of carpentry. Pretty sure no one came back to retrieve them on J-7.
