Starting with Braden and Buchanan which evolved into Novak, Kinsley, and others.
I must’ve watched hundreds of these, but the one I remember, the one I will never forget, is the one where at the end of the show when just the two moderators were there exchanging conclusions and debate points, Pat Buchanan said to Michael Kinsley “After abortion we’re coming after birth control.“. And Kinsley just sort of waved his hand dismissively and said “Oh come on Pat, don’t be ridiculous.“ I remember thinking that you take these fascists at their word, unlike liberals who tend to overpromise, and then deliver moderation, fascists go for the throat every time. We see that now in this incarnation of 1930s Germany in which we live.
The other more humorous moment which I distinctly recall, was that in one episode Novak had obviously lost one of his crowns on his front tooth, and the cameraman instead of staying back was shooting his face so you could see the preparation of the tooth and the fact that he had lost the crown. If the cameraman and the Director had liked Novak, they would’ve just panned backwards, and on the old analog TV sets you might or might not have noticed it. But there was no missing this. I remember running around my house looking for a camera so I could take a picture of it but had no film.
When Novak died I was pleased that no one would ever again be subjected to that horrifying scowl and sneer. He was mean and nasty.

(27,374 posts)Was Bow Tie Boy on that or was it another similar program?
I remember when Frank Zappa was on debated free speech. He cleaned everyone's clock that day, had them all stuttering.
So CNN is bringing it back?

(27,211 posts)He was just brilliant. He once ya ve a fantastic interview about how he spontaneously composed his guitar solos, which differed from everyone else is guitar solos in performance. It was extremely thoughtful and provocative.

(18,470 posts)Was on too,. I began to watch it when the hosts were Paul Begala and Carlson.
Carlson promised to eat his shoe if something happened. Hillary showed up with a RightWing shoe cake for Tucker.
Then Jon Stewart was on, told them they were ruining the Country. The show was canceled the next week. Jon said he did not realize how easy it was to get it canceled.. I was a Jon Stewart fan. Tucker and Paul, not so much.

(27,211 posts)I had forgotten about him.
He lost a lot of races that he was in charge of if I remember correctly. But you’re right, he was pretty aggressive for a Dem.

(27,980 posts)I sure as shit wasn’t going to watch him lay the groundwork for the invasion of Iraq. Before that, I couldn’t stand Pat Buchanan, so I never developed a habit of watching.

Novak was apparently a very wealthy man. That was intimated in some discussions and he didn’t deny it.

(27,980 posts)I found him creepy beyond measure. Couldn’t watch, couldn’t read.

(73,676 posts)His fans here will be fierce, but it was the seminal puzzlement about him for me. Yes he said the "a-hole" word in the general ambience where f-CARLSON was present, not aimed at him. Then over the many years i saw STEWART play footsie with Glen becKK and O'REILLY something like can't we get along, leading me to skip him forever.

(37,613 posts)It's very depressing, frustrating, and more than a little exasperating of how that was dismissed, and the people who tried to warn about it were brushed aside as the kooky ones.

But I also remember John Stewart laying into Tuckums and making fun of his little bow tie.
The video is out there somewhere!

(34,540 posts)If it was on I paid some attention until I wanted to smack someone. From the beginning there were large gaps in my viewership. I loved best the Jon Stewart smack down and I had just haphazardly turned it on when I saw Jon there, lucky me. Then there was the time when Novak lost an eyebrow, now THAT cracked me up *I do not remember him losing a crown perhaps I am mixed up?*. For the most part from the beginning to the ending I really never felt anything good was coming out of it and cannot say I saw a whole lot of several years.
I do not ever remember feeling that the Dems were ever very effective.

(27,211 posts)The conservatives were always extremely demonstrative, effectively verbal in their arguments, and dominating. And the so-called liberal would just sit there, sputtering, and saying things like “oh, come on” or “that’s not true” and I used to think my God, if anybody is listening to this and is unsure of who has the most energy, we’re going to be at fascism very soon. I was correct in that surmise as it turned out.
It always seemed as if they, our guys, were not really quite sure they were right. The Republicans can make anything seem right and true just with their presentation when talking to someone who has no idea about any of it, that is sadly much of our population.
We need to look as confident in our policies as they do and push the absolute positives for all people at the very top as well. Yes, it will help the underdogs in this country but look how that helps you, the already well off, too.

(19,717 posts)The conservative columnist was a real sweetheart. He’d have been all over the January 6 coup, right?
My favorite Crossfire memory, though, was the time Gore Vidal was on with Braden and Carlson. Carlson was all excited, I thought of being in the presence of greatness. He just wanted a chance to show how smart he is and was going to make the most of his opportunity to belittle Vidal, who had had an epic on-air confrontation with TV’s original conservative gasbag, William F. Buckley on his PBS show, Firing Line. Vidal called him a “crypto- Nazi” and Buckley said he wanted to “sock” the “queer.” So, years later, after being denied the chance to complete an entire sentence for most of the CNN Crossfire program, the quasi-exasperated author looked him in the eye and asked, “What, exactly, is a ‘Tucker’?” Carlson’s shit-eating wug transformed into sad.

(1,919 posts)I don’t remember watching Crossfire, but I did love the old shows like the McLaughlin Group. My husband and I had drinks once with Bob Novak. He wasn’t offensive, but he wasn’t a dynamic conversationalist either. He was mostly inscrutable.
