(130,468 posts)was some really basic anatomy and hygiene explained cursorily to a bunch of embarrassed kids who would rather be anywhere else. There was no discussion of how to do it, let alone how to enjoy it. And although that was a long time ago, I figure it's probably a lot the same now. How to do sex is something all animals figure out very quickly without instruction. Sex ed is important because it teaches how to avoid some of the negative side-effects.

(15,381 posts)Or the (depending on the school district) health and relationship classes high school Juniors sometimes get where developing healthy intimate relationships are discussed.
Schools where sexual health and relationships are discussed tend to have lower incidents of teen pregnancy and sexual assault or abuse.
Just saying.

(12,582 posts)Talk about being singled out. I was the only 4th grader in that class. Weird. At least the school nurse was very open and welcomed me in her office to discuss issues if I needed to. That was in the early 70s in elementary school. That must have been so hard for my mom. She was not really an open person or one who felt comfortable talking about sex. She actually went to the principal and asked that I be allowed to join the class.
I was thinking about that when I heard DeSantis wanted to expand the "don't say gay" bill and restrictions on teaching sexuality and gender issues up through 8th grade.

We've had years to study the numbers, and it's pretty conclusively proven at this point.
Course we know how wingnuts like Bimboebert here hate actual facts, logical arguments, critical thinking, etc.
Feel like we're back in the 70's, I remember these arguments back then, which is about when it started in a lot of places.
My parents gave me 'the talk' and the book 'What's Happening to Me?' when I was 8 or 9 years old, and I was never really banned from looking at my stepdad's Playboys as a kid. The Joy of Sex and The Happy Hooker were on the bookshelf.
I knew a LOT before sex ed in school came around, put it like that

(4,039 posts)which was controversial but without it I wouldn't have been enjoying anything. Because of all the warnings about getting a bad reputation, etc. from my mom and society. I mourn all the relationships I messed up before I got a hold of that book.
We don't all figure it out by ourselves, we get lots of wrong messages.
I worry about the new wave of censorship.

I didn't know what the hell happened, and I freaked out because I thought I broke my penis and that I would never be able to urinate again.

(33,643 posts)Possibly lube as it has medical advantages in some cases, but highly doubtful that's commonly discussed unless a student asks questions about it.
In my book, a properly equipped boudoir stocks a variety of purpose-specific lubricants

(28,351 posts)and she are opening a series of sex ed kiosks at bowling alleys, arcades, and malls. At these kiosks males will expose themselves to females, and everyone will giggle about it following a payment of $40 on the credit card. At each experience, one of the males and one of the females will wed.

(33,643 posts)She did marry the father, they've been together for 17 years IIRC, had 4 kids and opened a business together, and now she's a US Congresswomen.
So there's a certain irony to her complaining in this way.

By the time we got to sex Ed we pretty much knew it all. The sex Ed teachers just tried to scare the shit out of us about STDs.

(27,238 posts)How would she know if she wasnt in school?
That said last week I was subbing in a split 4/5 grade class and the 5th graders were pulled out to have a class that explained the differences in boys and girls bodies, what is what is going on in their bodies during puberty, the instructor even passed out pads to girls while explaining monthly periods. I thought this was great and it took the unknown out of ones changes in bodies as they grow. No sexual things were covered.
So STFU you stupid high school dropout idiot. ,
