South Dakota Republican calls BS on GOP's histrionic Mount Rushmore fundraising - RawStory
Mount Rushmore DESTROYED, blares the campaign committee of Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) in a recent email to supporters. Radical Democrats are ramming ahead with their attempts to dismantle our landmarks and history starting with destroying Mount Rushmore!
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) similarly warned that we are running out of time to save Mt. Rushmore because it could be RIPPED DOWN soon.
SAVE MOUNT RUSHMORE, shouted an email from the National Republican Congressional Committee, the GOPs U.S. House re-election arm that Emmer led from 2019 until early this year. Dont allow this incredible monument to be ruined for future generations of American patriots.

(11,767 posts)Look, the reality is that the Democratic Party has had its share of assholes. The difference is, when we realize we have an asshole in our midst (with very few exceptions - I'm looking at you Manchin), we vote them out and otherwise end their political aspirations.
I used to like the fire with with Anthony Weiner went after Republicans. I used to say, "we need more people like him". When it came out he was sexting underage girls... dropped him. Where is his political career?
Same with Jon Edwards. He was pretty popular in Democratic circles. Found out he was a scumbag...Dropped him! You don't hear about him anymore.
In contrast, it seems the more of a lying POS a Republican is, the more secure his/her job is within the Party.
Republican voters frequently vote for the very same people who take away all of the things that have made life livable in the US. The only thing they need to hear is that Black and Brown people get hurt worse, and they are okay. That is plain dumb.

(1,273 posts)At the top of the Abscam pyramid, only 1 House Rep was a Republican. We've definitely had our own.
Sometimes, I think, we're too good at it.
Still not happy about the way Al Franken was handled, but that's water under the bridge.

(11,767 posts)There is a fine line when actually having ethics can have bad effects.
Republicans/Conservatives don't seem to have that problem. They are laser focused on getting and keeping power, to the detriment of all. Their voters lack critical thinking skills.

(11,767 posts)I am sure we have scared away a good number of good people with all the nonsense they have to go through.
We tend to attract good people to the Democratic Party while Conservatives/Republicans seem to reward the worst. We can also be fickle and scary sometimes... I do hope we learn to at least allow due process to run its course before just attacking.

(56,260 posts)it's easy for republicans to lump it into the same category as confederate statues and argue that if we're tearing down those, then we're coming after mt. rushmore, too.
but the confederate statues were and are unambiguously evil. people don't normally celebrate losers that way. the statues were erected as a statement that hey, slavery may be illegal now, but that doesn't mean we can't treat black people horribly.
i don't think mt. rushmore was created with such evil intent. and yet, it remains an insult to native americans. i've been there, it's an amazing work of art and engineering. but you do have to overlook at lot of baggage to really feel good about it.
in any event, i'm not aware of any serious plans to tear it down or cover it up or anything.
