(4,089 posts)OM so be it
Science says there exists a grand order, systems of regularity that can be studied and measured.
The theory of a unified field is not laughed out of the scientists' lounge.
But that such orderliness exists also in morality is too little appreciated beyond our short measures.

(32,329 posts)Cohen took out a 130k loan to pay Stormy Daniels and Trump paid Cohen back in 35k payments and illegally claimed as payment to Cohen for services rendered. The problem will be to prove the campaign finance violation to New York (the felony). This would have been much easier to prove in federal court because the federal law is written differently.
Will Trump succeed in moving the trial out of Manhattan?
Pomerantz and Dunne were going to charge more financial fraud crimes, will Bragg leave them off?
Lots of questions to still be answered. Just prosecuting Trump for a misdemeanor will be a mistake.

(114,616 posts)Yes, inviting (but not compelling) a target of an investigation to come in and explain himself is usually the final step before he gets the bad news, but this is a former president. An indictment can be handed down but put under seal, meaning nothing happens with it, no warrant, no perp walk, no trial, no jury, and certainly no conviction.
I don't know which prosecutor will finally hand down an unsealed indictment, but I strongly suspect it will be one who intends to retire.
I also think that once the first indictment drops, others will soon follow.
I hope I'm wrong about the sealed indictment, but Bragg doesn't strike me as courageous enough to take that final step and I know he's not planning to retire soon.

(6,480 posts)change. Then a GJury has to be selected. And if the charge isn't a federal election-related crime (which it doesn't look like on its face), it's only a misdemeanor regarding wrong use of funds. Hope I'm wrong, but unless Bragg's suddenly found some legal gold buried under a rock, this case may end up being a dog's breakfast.

(59,522 posts)this "wrong use of funds" would be a misdemeanor. If you think of it, it boils down to embezzling. He stole funds people gave his campaign and paid off his porn star with them.
If you or I embezzled $130K, we'd be facing a lot more than a misdemeanor. I don't know the law, but if it is a law making wrong use of election funds a misdemeanor, and that law was passed by elected officials, that's rich.

(1,107 posts)Of course the argument for bringing charges is that justice will be served. We'd all love to see this lying scum serving time behind bars.
But the reality is that if charges are brought, he will never serve a day in prison. His lawyers will appeal and obfuscate until he is taking the dirt nap. This is what billions will buy you in a nation that has as it's symbol the Statue of Bigotry.
While he is waiting to die he will love every minute by playing the "persecuted patriot" on the campaign trail.
