For Bill Maher likers only please.....

He's been on CNN, with Jake Tapper, interview tonight. Why would someone I agree with 90% of the time be so ignorant about COVID????? He reiterated tonight about the stupidness of it all ( shutdowns).

Tell me why?

There aren't many politically-oriented comedians who are going to come down on my side of the fence on every issue. He can feel however he wants about COVID. I just won't stand or sit too close to him when he finally invites me as a guest on his show!

Bill's never had any health problems, weight problems, nothing. He doesn't understand, bad health is alien to him. Like people who roll their eyes at the mention of food intolerances or allergies or that if you have a poor immune system masks help you avoid catching colds and things. They just can't understand. Like I will never understand depression. I think, well, just get up and do something you like, eat some ice cream or watch a movie and snap out of it. Doesn't work that way.

I appreciate both him and Whoopi Goldberg for being themselves, being wrong or nutty about some things. So what! They're interesting individuals.

mind between myself and the other party. The initial breech causes me to look more closely/deeply/broadly/whatever than I had before and I find all sorts of shit in that person's speech/work history that I hadn't encountered before and don't agree with -- or had encountered but overlooked or forgot. People are weird and messy and inconsistent, all of us.

IOW, are you sure about that 90% thing? I doubt Bill Maher agrees with Bill Maher 90% of the time.

He’s generally been a champion of good views. And even when he was dogging Dems too much it wasn’t too over the line. And he’s really wrong on Covid, Libs, and many other topics. That’s fine.

But he’s absolutely a bigot on trans rights. He has absolutely pushed bigoted views on trans people. And not just given a platform to bigots, but he himself spewed bigotry.

Bill seems to think that trans people don’t know what’s good for them and the government needs to tell them how to live their lives and what to do with their bodies. And he seems to think they’re tricking kids into being transsexual. He’s repeated these bigoted thoughts many times now. It’s sickening and so harmful to a community that is being targeted for persecution and violence right now.

He did two things 1) attacked Stan Lee (after he just died) and Millenials for getting trump Elected (despite comic book readers and millennials being two of the most pro-Hillary and anti-Trump groups imaginable)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/entertainthis/2019/01/26/bill-maher-blasts-stan-lee-fans-comic-book-lovers-again-grow-up/2688622002/

And the final straw was when he had Debrah Soh in peddling Trans bullshit without the slightest pushback.

https://tgforum.com/debra-soh-needs-to-do-some-library-research/

I had deeply suspected he was a transphobe but that was the final nail in the coffin.

Looking back I should have realized he was scum during the Ben Affleck affair. He is a complete bigot against Muslims and I will forever ashamed of having defended him on DU back then.

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/10/bill-maher-dangerous-critique-of-islam-ben-affleck/381266/

But I should have realized when he got mad about babies named Muhammad:

https://archive.thinkprogress.org/maher-says-hes-alarmed-by-british-babies-being-given-muslim-names-worried-islam-will-take-over-world-1ddd198cd295/

He shouldn’t be promoted on DU anymore until he admits his bigotry and tries to makes amends. He is past his three strikes with me!!!

Sat Mar 11, 2023, 08:42 AM

You could tell by his attitude change. He is a man who loves the stage, loves performing his act.
Now he couldn't. His resentment of not being able to perform for audiences shaped his perception of
Covid and the lock down. Maher seems to forget the beginning of Covid, where doctors didn't know how to treat it.
Hospitals were loading up, we were storing bodies in freezer trucks. Our hospitals were overwhelmed. Supplies like Mask
were scarce. Kids in schools would have spread this thing even worse. Bill forgot about all that and selfishly only sees that
he couldn't tour and play for crowds. I've watched Bill for years and agreed with him 90% of the time, but ever since he got the Larry King glasses he's been selectively clueless.

I also think he's really funny at times. He usually has some good jokes in his opening monologue and some of his New Rules jokes are funny. In a 24-7 news cycle where bad news is a constant, I take humor and lol moments where I can find them, like Maher and SNL. I don't have to like the entire presentation, but the moments that are funny to me are worth the time it takes to watch the shows.

As to your specific question, when it comes to COVD and, honestly, many medical issues (weight being one), he arrives at conclusions of his own design, and is more often than not, wrong. When it comes to trans issues, he is so far off the mark, that he often doesn't even make sense. Every now and again, he gets something right, or less wrong, but I would never use something he said about medical issues as "proof", even if he and I agreed on the particular subject.

This may be a stereotype, but I also think like many actors/comedians, he has an overinflated sense of self (see last week's show with that nutbar, Russell Brand!) and fancies his own opinion on any subject to be nearly beyond reproach.

Like you and some others in this thread, I often find myself in disagreement with him, sometimes only slightly, and sometimes polar opposites. There are those who can't stand any slight disagreement with their stated positions and don't realize how much they are really like Bill Mahar in that respect!
