(Guardian UK) More than a quarter of Republicans approve of the January 6 Capitol attack, according to a new poll. More than half think the deadly riot was a form of legitimate political discourse.
The Economist and YouGov survey said 27% of Republicans either strongly or somewhat approved of the riot on 6 January 2021, which Donald Trump incited in an attempt to overturn his election defeat by Joe Biden.
Nine deaths, including law enforcement suicides, have been linked to the attack. More than 1,000 people have been arrested and hundreds convicted.
The longest sentence yet handed down is 10 years in prison, to a former New York police officer who assaulted Capitol officers. The statutory maximum sentence for seditious conspiracy, the most serious convictions yet secured, is 20 years.
Trump was impeached for inciting an insurrection, but acquitted. The House January 6 committee made four criminal referrals regarding Trump to the Department of Justice. The federal investigation continues. .............(more)

(24,468 posts)That means 85% of all voters are rational thinkers.

(10,899 posts)27% of 30% is about 8% of voters.
Still too much, but let's keep this in perspective.

So, we're talking 27% of 24% or 6.48%.
In 2023, I'm not shocked to hear 1 in 15 or 16 is a radical right-winger.

(790 posts)Kinda like to hear about THEM, from them, something. Why no interviews, in depth poll analysis about that silent GOP disapproval?
I cannot be the only one who would like some relief from hearing from this ~12.5% J6 approving portion of the populace. (TBH, I think it's likely smaller). The fact that they are particularly repulsive does not warrant an exclusive focus on their viewpoint.

(16,396 posts)More than 1/4 of Repubs approve of the attack, and "more than half" think it was legitimate political discourse. More than half of who? Half of all Republicans or half of the ones who said they "aporoved"?
It doesn't add up either way. If half the Repubs polled said it was legit political discourse, wouldn't that mean half of them approved of it? How does someone "approve" of the attack unless they think it was legit political discourse, and vice versa?
Like I said, I'm confused! 🤔

Here's the question:
51. Capitol Takeover Approval
Do you approve or disapprove of the Trump supporters taking over the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. on January 6th, 2021 to stop Congressional proceedings?
It was answered via the Likert Scale: Strongly Approve/ Approve / Neither / Disapprove / Strong Disapprove
Republicans
Strongly Approve 8 percent
Approve 19 percent
Neither 25 percent
Disapprove 27 percent
Strong Dis 20 percent (total is 99 percent)
In the previous question, which was about January 6 as political discourse, 54 percent of Republicans did indeed respond that it was legitimate political discourse. So I guess they can disapprove of something they consider legitimate.

(16,396 posts)I completely missed that link. It's weird the way some people's minds work and very weird, imo, that so many people would say, "Yes, I think that was legitimate political discourse," and also say, "No, I don't approve of it."
Humans are strange creatures!

(6,617 posts)especially when they contradict themselves. Of course there is a faction of the Repug party along with Fux Nooze and similar media outlets directly responsible for those anti-social and anti-democratic attitude because some people are just too stupid to think for themselves.

(28,471 posts)While 25% is still too high by at least 25%, with a 66% turnout in 2020 what it really boils down to is only 8.25% of likely voters support the insurrection. That sounds about right for TFG's base.
