In Israel, TVs dystopian Handmaids is protest fixture - AP
The women, growing in numbers as the demonstrations against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus policies intensify, say they are protesting to ward off what they believe will be a dark future if the government follows through on its plan to overhaul the judiciary.
This display is a representation of the things that we fear, said Moran Zer Katzenstein, founder of the womens rights advocacy group Bonot Alternativa, or building an alternative, which is behind the Handmaids protest.
Women are going to be the first to be harmed under the overhaul, she added.
In a move that has sparked widespread opposition, Netanyahus government is pushing to weaken the Supreme Court and limit the independence of the judiciary, steps they say will restore power to elected legislators and make the courts less interventionist. Critics say the move upends Israels system of checks and balances and pushes it toward autocracy.
The overhaul has sent tens of thousands of people into the streets in protest each week.

(43,162 posts)If most Florida women -- in fact, women in general -- were to do what Israeli women do -- who equally serve in their military as part of their societal training -- there would be a gender civil war here.

(4,554 posts)The good men who fail to speak out contribute to our demise. This thing is rolling out of control. I would say that people will wake up but for the most part Americans had to lose someone in the Iraq war to give one thought to it. How many women will die here until people wake the #ell up? They have already begun to do so. Their fear and plight rarely gets notice and when it does their reproductive organs have already disintegrated within for lack of proper health care and sepsis. Doctors with hands tied and quaking cant get the message across. The question is why do so many American men hate women and transgenders? Why do they refuse to stand? Just as we all have to stand with BLM to make it happen every citizen has to stand up for gender equality and body autonmy.
I beg my husband and male friends to make the call, write the emails.
This is a minimum effort and may have little consequence but at least it is something. I send links and contact info to them to make it as easy as possible but nothing comes of it. It makes me feel like I am nothing. A million small things can mean something. Feet in the street can mean something but the Womens marches in this country have dissolved into nothing. DC had no national march on International Womens Day. We are cooked.

(4,554 posts)And women I know and care about. The women that I read about and their life experiences. My thoughts also center on the fact that the same women who spoke up in the seventies and grew up at that time are the only ones speaking out about the true danger women are in today. Red, gerrymandered states such as my own are not wasting any time eradicating the power of women and transgender people. Its already happening Like it or not, the water in the pot is boiling. Change in this country has crawled to a stop unless it pertains to women and minorities and with that we careen backwards at head snapping speed. This wont be solved until everyone gets on their feet and I just dont see the white men doing it. It should have been an immediate wave of action but that window is gone. We will have to lose one woman at a time until the average Joe gets it that our lives are in danger here. Thank you for clarifying your comment.

(4,554 posts)I know I am not the only one who feels desperate for the young women and children and the world to come. Its not that I dont try and dont work for peace and fair voting. Its just that these are desperate times. Im sorry that you feel I am a detriment to other women. Im sure one day they will join me in the streets. Take care and stay safe.

(43,162 posts)All I think is that if we want to be seen differently and taken seriously, we have to do what all Israeli women do. We will be seen as a threat when men know that we've trained for war and can handle weapons like all Israeli women do. If we want to be as successful as they, we have to do what they do. We've tried everything else.
Don't tell me what I mean -- I didn't say you're a detriment to other women. I've already been out in the streets -- years and years. Deafeatism isn't hopeful or helpful. Maybe think about it. Take care.

(45,820 posts)in my little Red Florida county. Surprisingly, we get a lot of positive response from drivers passing by. We also get a religious fanatic or two who comes along to set us straight.
I stopped doing them. Why? Because here in Florida, most young people didn't vote in the midterms. I guess these young women are OK with being 2nd class citizens. Kind of makes me wonder why I'm putting myself on the line when they won't even get off their butts to vote.

(13,345 posts)As an example, how have laws changed preventing police from killing black men for minor traffic violations that the police escalate as an excuse? The massive protests after George Floyds murder dis not change many laws, if any.
Perhaps protests still draw attention to major issues, but not much seems to change.

(4,554 posts)Here is a link. Down in the article it talks about people who have supported groups or activities not necessarily participating in them can also be held accountable. Its broad and they cant be trusted. My experience with Homeland Security lets me know that.
From the article:
This language is broad enough to authorize the government to seize any assets of any individuals involved in the Vieques Island protests or of any organization supporting the protests of which the person is a member, or from any individuals who were supporting the protesters in any way. Possible supporters of the protesters could include student organizations that sponsored participation in the demonstration, the Rainbow/Push Coalition, the Rev. Sharpton's National Action Network, and religious or community organizations that provided housing or food to the protesters.

(43,162 posts)If the ACLU says that the Patriot Act is broad enough to interpret all protest as terrorism, and if it hasn't litigated that interpretation in the courts in the 20+ years it's had the chance, then the ACLU is weak.
Here's what the ACLU says it did in 2022 (bolding mine):
https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/ten-ways-aclu-supporters-showed-up-2022
2. We showed up in court with transgender kids, their parents, and providers in the fight to protect gender-affirming care in Arkansas.
3. With our local partners and county officials, we successfully negotiated groundbreaking bail reform in Shelby County, Tennessee without litigation.
... "we advocated," "rallied," "spread the word," "pushed back" blah blah blah... because I don't see court cases won.

(43,162 posts)legally support all peaceful protest in the U.S.
Even if it turns out to be state governments, the laws on both asset forfeiture and protest are unconstitutional.
Getting police patterns & practices investigated is part of the Garland DOJ. Garland also overturned a Trump-era ban on federal consent settlements with local jurisdictions over reforms for policing and other issues. Last year, Garland's DOJ launched sweeping pattern-and-practice investigations of the police departments in Minneapolis, Louisville and Phoenix.

(43,162 posts)When rights depend on the right person elected president, that means democracy is teetering, and the nation's people could be in peril.
I did read #20. Did you read my #34 response?
The idea that rights under rule of men depends on who is elected makes sense, even though it's not democracy. That's what many geopolitical types say we're in -- the 'trying to decide' zone.
In that zone, the idea that rights under rule of law depends on equal enforcement of the law (rather than under rule of men, which mean leader-driven totalitarian rewards & punishment) is at the heart of the fuming going on right now. That's the teetering part.
Those who want rule of men want themselves above rule of law, and accuse enforcement of law as a "witch hunt," "weaponization," and other strongman tribal lingo.
We who want democracy established solidly, just want consistent, equal enforcement of the law, and sentences that proportionally give relief, depending on the scale of loss, harm, or damage inflicted by violating the law.
None of this is over yet. No 'rules' about elections can suspend rule of law or its enforcement, no matter what the 'opposition' says.

Would that war have ended when it did, without those protests, no.

(4,554 posts)We had enough protesters to completely fill the streets and surrounded the Capitol building on all sides. The streets were shoulder to shoulder. Over 500,000 people. It was an amazing experience being surrounded by like minded people in a country of ostriches. I was so excited and called home to see what kind of TV coverage we were getting. Crickets. CSpan had coverage for 30 minutes but major networks completely blacked out the event. On Monday Keith Olbermann did have a segment on it. Who really knows what demonstrations have or will occur here. The media has the final say.
I want to say that during that event the police were amazing. On foot and horseback they were around but not intimidating. The folks of all ages and colors never once thought that storming a public building would be a grand idea. This is why I have zero sorrow for the 1/6 clowns. They knew exactly what they were doing!

Went to quite a few Anti-Iraq War Protests in the S.F. Bay Area.
The thing is, each time, the protests got better/smarter in counting attendence, getting out the word, and getting coverage.
Remember, in 2004 most people's Smart phones weren't so smart (Nokia).
Now-a-days, everyone is a reporter/editor/publisher/broadcaster, right from their own pocket.
And the big news organizations DO NOT like to get "scooped".
If they refuse to cover an event, they lose eyeballs/viewers... not good for business.
Hope22
(4,554 posts)That is cool that you were there in 2004. We went in the last one before Covid. I think it was 2019. We marched past the White House. T@#$& had three layers of fencing and armed guards with the big black long guns out front. It made quite a picture. The crowd was amazing but nothing close to the anti surge numbers. It was my last hurrah I fear. The police tried to keep us from walking down the street by pointing us in another direction but the people wanted to lay eyes on the house. We stood out front in horror with no thought of rushing the gates. We sat in the park across the street. I thought I would get to go to DC this year but there was no national march there. The closest nationally advertised event for me this year was a three hour drive. I remember when pretty much every city had an event. Thanks for sharing. It feels lonely these days!💗🙏

(64,030 posts)I was watching JBS last week and a host was interviewing two news editorialists, one a secular Jew, the other more Orthodox.
The secular guest was saying he has no desire to be orthodox, and neither does anyone amongst his family and friends. So Netanyahu's rightwing moves frighten him.
He also commented that secular Jews tend to have 1-2 children, whereas Orthodox Jews have 4 or more. He said Orthodox will be the majority in a few decades, leading to a much more conservative Likud and judiciary. He actually recommended a split of the nation. (How painful was that for India and Pakistan?)
