A toxic algae bloom known as a red tide has been killing fish along the Gulf Coast and southern Florida, kicking up the stench of decay.
Now, a massive blob of seaweed twice as wide as the U.S. is drifting across the Atlantic Ocean and could wash ashore in Florida in the coming months, creating an even bigger mess. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/florida-braces-for-5000-mile-wide-stinky-seaweed-blob-and-a-toxic-algae-bloom/ar-AA18LxPJ
(its twice as big as the USA & it doubles EVERY month. Expected in July so HOW BIG will it be in July?)

(8,701 posts) The blob is currently pushing west and will pass through the Caribbean and up into the Gulf of Mexico during the summer, with the seaweed expected to become prevalent on beaches in Florida around July, said Dr. Brian Lapointe, a researcher at Florida Atlantic Universitys Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, speaking to CNN.

I've seen tfg used for both, especially lately as Desatan gets more attention and publicity.
They are same coin, different sides yet the same, more or less. Both are tfg. The 2.0 is much more dangerous. Desatan is actually a more fitting name, now that I think about it.

Florida and parts of the south might be in deep shit. Give it a couple of years. Hydrogen sulphide is heavier than air collects in low lying areas. How much of the south is a low lying area?

(8,701 posts)The true peril of sargassum comes when it washes ashore. The seaweed begins to rot after a few days on land, releasing hydrogen sulfide gas that smells like rotten eggs and leaving behind brown sludge that can foul beaches for weeks. Hydrogen sulfide can threaten human health, and the sheer amount of seaweed can be too much for local crews to deal with.
Parts of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico were shrouded in an estimated 200 tons of sargassum earlier in March, prompting warnings of excessive levels of seaweed near the popular Playa del Carmen. Officials warned some beaches were at risk of 3 feet of seaweed accumulation in a week, with no signs of the sargassum diminishing as summer approaches.

(22,114 posts)contracted out barges to rid the pesty seaweed from shorelines about to be impacted? Moron...I bet that he's not done one damn thing other than play the blame game, point fingers at everyone else.
At least, I hope that the weed accumulates just offshore of djt's place, and even accumulates somehow on land, at his place, after all, doesn't he want his FL visitors to experience the full breadth and depth of FL? It would be a nice change somewhat, if folks didn't have to smell the BS coming off of djt finally (and smell something else for a bit).

Perhaps this in a way may help prepare Floridians mentally for the near future that their state politicians seem to be ignoring...99% of Dade County will experience annual flooding by 2050. Temps will rise so much that outdoor workers have to show up for work at four am and quit by noon or one o'clock to avoid heat exhaustion. It's going to be a mosquito-infested hell.
