Putting all officers in uniform means that if they aren’t going to carry out the law then they need ti do it in uniform and be put on notice for it. Seems to me that it is the right thing to do. Pretty hard to get out of dereliction of duty while in uniform.

26. 'stupid' is my opinion

and my 'reasoning' behind it is that this has about as much real impact - as a "Hug a stranger day." Ergo - cheap ploy. Window dressing.

Additional units, mounted patrols, additional gear, strategic response teams (while I advocate none of that, a strongly suspect none will be necessary) - these things all have the potential of at least having a real impact. "Everybody wear a uniform Tuesday." (with a lapel pin?) - is both toothless, and insubstantial. And basically a shallow con - on the public, and the department.

And, for what its worth - there is my opinion.

I believe it is so that anyone not performing their duty must do so as a uniformed officer. Easily identifiable. If they don’t wear their uniform that is also neglecting an order. Makes sense to me.

High level plain clothes.

But during a (widely televised) city emergency they all had to get back in uniform.
Sleep in the barracks, all leaves cancelled.
No communication to them whatsoever.

Plain clothes detectives means officers that usually wear a suit to work. Think detective Lenny Briscoe on the original Law and Order. They are not talking about undercover officers.

in which the detectives were required to report for duty one day in uniform. I think it was supposed to be an annual thing - uniform day. As a recall, Det. Sgt. Harris showed up in a three piece suit resulting in a testy exchange with Captain Miller.

If the goal is to "show the flag," all officers need to be in uniform.

If a NYPD officer is obviously an officer, and has their ID visible, not only does it show presence and numbers, it also makes it a bit harder for one of them to walk around breaking windows. Not all police are on the side of the law.

I hadn't considered the aspect of stopping "sympathizers" from participating or failing to step up and enforce against offenders. I was going along the lines of NYPD has ~35,000 officers. Putting the normally plain clothes in full uniform pluses up NYPD's street visibility. But it also puts TFG sympathetic officers on notice that they will uphold their oath or be seen to be shirking their duty.

Trump will know when he’s supposed to report and I just don’t think he will miss the opportunity to announce when and what time he will be showing up. He will want the biggest fanfare he can arrange and he is still hoping for his followers to riot in a show of solidarity with him.
