Stormy was just trying to shop her story about her and Trump, and when the media outlets she approached reached out to Trump for comment, he then approached her (via Cohen) to pay her to be quiet.

There are plenty of articles on the timeline of the hush money payment, and none of them describe her trying to blackmail Trump. They describe her trying to sell her very newsworthy story to media organizations and Trump squelching it. That is not blackmail, that's Trump committing a fraud upon the voters to hide the truth that they had a right to know about him, and that would very likely have cost him the 70k votes he won the electoral collage by. She was not paid that money "not to tell a man's wife" about an affair. She wasn't threatening to tell Melania. That is a false right wing talking point. This was Trump denying voters important, relevant truth about him.
