A Florida House of Representatives committee on Wednesday advanced an anti-trans bill that is so broad and so extreme that it could also prevent people from getting treated for breast cancer.
The bill passed the Healthcare Regulation Committee by a vote of 12-5 and now heads to the House for a vote. The measure is one of the cruelest in the country to target transgender and LGBTQ rights and care. It bans gender-affirming care for minors and would force them to medically detransition, or stop receiving treatments such as hormone therapy. But the bills vague wording has larger repercussions as well.
The text defines gender clinical interventions as procedures or therapies that alter internal or external physical traits, including surgeries that change primary or secondary sexual characteristics. During the debate, Democratic Representative Christine Hunschofsky pointed out that this could prevent people from getting treatment for breast cancer, as the overly broad language could apply to mastectomies.
Bill sponsor Randy Finewho prior to being a Republican representative was a gambling industry executive, not a doctorwas surprised to learn that young people can get breast cancer.

(108,783 posts)Theres no line they wont cross. No low is too low for them. Im seriously convinced at this point the MAGAs would attempt mass murder if they knew they could get away with it. And Fox News would probably cheer them on.

(24,906 posts)circumcision also? Seems like it would if you follow the letter of the law.
Would it make it illegal to separate siamese twins?

(6,017 posts)Most of these bills - all of them I've seen so far - simply add that it's for trans people only. It's brutal & clearly discriminatory, but also an easy way to eliminate the problem of affecting anyone who is not trans. All it will take is a simple amendment. They're not worried about hiding their bigotry.
But back to detransition:
Forcing teens who have been working with a team of health care professionals to go off blockers & or hormones is horrible. Once they do, their endogenous (produced by the body) hormones will start being produced again, and they'll be forced to go through another puberty, one that does not match their identity. Depending on how old they are and how long they've been on hormone therapy, some may end up with both sets of secondary traits and have to live that way - if they can. That is cruel & inhumane.
But also, sex hormones co-regulate other body hormones. Specifically, serotonin. Many trans people start hormones and for the first time since puberty find that a number of serotonin-related body functions start working correctly again. The ongoing theory is that just like hundreds of other body part from genitals, to certain bones, to 20+ brain sites, serotonin receptors keyed to sex hormones also sometimes develop opposite a person's assigned sex/gender. Being forced to start or revert back to the "wrong" sex hormone means things like mood, sleep, thirst & hunger, immune & autoimmune, and sensory issues may not "work" correctly. Again, this is cruel & inhumane.
This is true medical "experimentation" foisted on teens for political and religious gain. It's not unfair or inaccurate to compare Republicans to Josef Mengele in that respect.

(22,593 posts)And medical experimention is supposed to require informed consent. These untrained cretins are practicing medicine without a license AND forcing people to undergo medical experimentation on people without consent! God, this is absolutely horrific!

(6,300 posts)Thats the problem: youre dealing with fundamentalists who will say whatever untruth they can to fulfill a purpose they believe is given to them by God. Many of them literally believe Trans people are the work of Satan.
They will pretend to listen, but, they dont give a shit. Their only goal is to use the power of the state to force everyone into their narrow version of Christianity. Anyone who resists, in their opinion, is working with the Devil and should be killed.
You cant reason with people who reduce everything to good vs. evil, where, they are always good. Its impossible. The only thing you can do is make sure they never reach positions of power, which, weve failed at.

(22,593 posts)They really don't. They think trans kids, in particular, are just "confused."
According to their theology, God made 2 genders, male and female, and however you're born, that's what you're "supposed" to be. (Don't even ask them about intersex people; I'm sure they don't even know what that word means.) Transitioning, therefore, is going against God's will, which means it's sinful. *clue pearl clutching*
These loons believe that anatomy is destiny. If you're born with female body parts, for example, that means you're female, which also means you are only allowed to have sex with people who were born with male body parts. (Intersex? What's that?) In their eyes, trans women are really men and always will be, no matter what. Trans men, likewise, are really women.
According to them, if God gave you a penis, that means you are supposed to use it to make babies with someone who was born with a vagina (and presumably a working uterus and ovaries, although that is by no means guaranteed). If he gave you a vagina (and presumably a working uterus and ovaries, see above), that means He wants you to find someone born with a penis to make babies with. Why? Because that is God's will; how dare you defy Him! *barf*
Changing your body to make it different from how God made you is going against his will, according to these pinheads. Even though changing one's gender isn't nentioned in the Bible at all, they're pretty sure it's just as much of an an "abomination" as they believe homosexuality is, because (like homosexuality) it involves using the genitals you were born with in a way other than reproducing with someone who was born with the opposite set of genitals to yours.
People who believe all of the above regard trans people (especially trans kids) as deluded and confused. They evidently think that if they can stop trans kids from receiving gender affirming medical care, those kids will somehow come to their senses. Or ... something. I'm not clear on how that's supposed to work. But since they also believe (erroneously) that a large percentage of people who transition regret it eventually, maybe they think anyone who is denied the opportunity to transition will eventually realize that staying the sex they were assigned at birth is what they really wanted after all all. (Yeah, fat chance, nimrods, it does NOT work that way.)
I would wager that they probably even think they'll be doing trans kids a favor by preventing them om receiving general affirming care. Yes, I know how fucked up that is, but we are talking about some very fucked up people here.
I know how gross all this probably sounds. Believe me, I feel gross just from typing it. But I think it's important to know what these people believe and how they think. Thr first step in fighting something is knowing what makes it tick.

Dont believe me? Havent thought much about it? Start paying attention. Because all those inter-church squabbles over the last few years with traditionalists and conservatives insisting that they are only following scripture and only working to protect children and only using their ecclesial power to hold people accountable has, as it so often does in our near-theocratic country, bled over into legislation.
