General Motors is retiring the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car at the end of model year 2024 as the automaker shifts to an all-electric lineup by 2035.
On Wednesday, GM said the final sixth-generation Camaros will come off the assembly line at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in January next year.
Scott Bell, vice president, Global Chevrolet, did not say what will replace the muscle car, but said "this is not the end of Camaros story."
Why is the Camaro being retired?
Chevrolet spokesman Trevor Thompkins told the Free Press that at the end of model year 2024, the sixth-generation Camaro will have completed a strong nine-year lifecycle, and "Chevrolet made the decision now as a part of continuously evaluating our portfolio offerings for progress toward our EV future and sales demand."

(36,747 posts)Next one in about 8 years will be Subaru.
Its more cost effective right now to drive the wheels off what you have, repair it and drive it some more.

(100,104 posts)I had some problems in the beginning, but most of those were related to the navigation system and a cracked windshield (and also a dealer whose service department is run by morons that was a nightmare to communicate with). But now that I've got those problems ironed out it's been smooth sailing.
I'm already looking at the Acura Integra for my next car. A mid size luxury for $33K (which is about what the MSRP on my Legacy was) with all the modern amenities on it is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

(36,747 posts)Bought it nearly 6 years ago and good luck with it so far. Would like to see if I can get 200000 miles from it. Its halfway there.

(23,308 posts)Every other good car they've had, they either discontinued, or turned into glorified sewing machines....
I really miss the el camino. The Australian market had it as the Holden Ute.
But here? Nope.

That upset a lot of people.

(23,308 posts)...(though mildly so) but wound up buying one anyway. It turned out to be a decent car, and I kept it for eight years, then bought another one (for a decent-sized sedan, there weren't many other options. I HAD to buy a GM car, to get my dad's employee discount.)

(16,939 posts)but going out with a BANG! 1060 horsepower and a 0 to 60 speed of 1.7 seconds!
They will be done in December of 2023.
Oh, and the 'sticker' will be over $93,000 - and that's before it gets to the dealers and they 'play their games!'

(3,557 posts)Wait a few years and electric will be doing the same thing. I suspect were at the limits of what tires can handle.
Im not a muscle car sort of guy, but I do like a real sports car. I know electric will be plenty of fun, but Im sort of rushing to get my finances together to purchase an internal combustion Porsche 911 before theyre gone forever.
Shifting gears and the sound and feel of a real engine will be missed by certain enthusiasts.

(16,939 posts)Oh, yeah - Mickey Thompsons! Here's one article I found about it:

Good luck with the Porsche (might want to consider the Cayman GT4 too!) - even the new Corvette is now going 'electric' with an electric hybrid version (still a 'gas' V-8 - but an electric motor in front) and it knocks .2 seconds off of the 0-60 run!

(13,580 posts)It was nice while it lasted. I have owned a '68 4-4-2 and still have an '87 Firebird with a 5 liter engine I purchased new. There is nothing like the sound of those V8s rumbling when you start them up.
Now we own small Honda and I mostly drive a PHEV. The Firebird is a hangar queen and it's getting really hard to keep it repaired and finding parts. Especially when I have to tell my wife I need to spend some money on it.
In the not too far off future, if you want to see a Buick Grand National, Super Bee, Charger, GTO, Shelby Mustang....I could go on...will be in a museum or in the garage of a private collector who has more money than sense.
The future is electrically powered cars. We'd better get used to it.
