Hes telegenic, hes a lawyer by education and degree, hes sufficiently analytical, hes got a network show and books very fine guests
.
So hes in the middle of a serious discussion and out pops the question: Well, you know what Jay-Z says?
I turned to my wife and gave two answers:
1. Yes, he said: I just flushed my motherfucking earbuds down the fucking toilet. Fuck!
2. (A much saner response). No, but I know what George Bernard Shaw said
.
I know that John Oliver did a great piece on Ari but my God
its so lame. He needs to stop.

(46,154 posts)Shaw's expressed views were often contentious; he promoted eugenics and alphabet reform, and opposed vaccination and organised religion.
Shaw called vaccination 'a peculiarly filthy piece of witchcraft'.
Now, Jay-Zs Made in America Festival has partnered with biometrics identification company Clear to verify attendees vaccination status and expedite entry on to festival grounds.
https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2021/08/27/made-in-america-festival-health-pass/
Back to Made in America, though, every attendee should enroll with Health Pass prior to the event, festival officials also stated, emphasizing that users can equip their profiles with negative COVID tests as well as proof of vaccination. These individuals will then be eligible to utilize Clear fast lanes at the two-day happening, which will presumably make it easier (and quicker) for staff to check for proof of vaccination or a negative coronavirus test.
Notwithstanding organizers clear-cut preference for the use of Health Pass, Made in America relayed that employees will accept physical vaccination cards and printed COVID-19 test results if you are under 18 years of age or do not have a smartphone, with the latter classification appearing well-suited for passholders who opt to forgo utilizing the app or forget to do so. To be sure, after one uploads a vaccination card or test, it can typically take between 1 2 hours for status to be verified.

As a life-long (non-fundamentalist) atheist, I contend that it is just the opposite.
Respect is the default, and it is disrespect that must be earned.
Successful cross-cultural communication and multiculturalism requires respect.
Here's a university student from the city, who as part of her studies, in an experiment in multiculturalism, wants to create a fusion hip-hop / bambuco patiano music video. What is important for white folks (and others) to note here is that she comes correct, with respect for another culture (a state within a state). She takes the time to learn about the music, the culture, the history, and the religion of another culture, recognizing that she is walking onto hallowed territory, sacred territory.
The last 3 minutes or so have the resulting music video.
Black folks have a lot to teach us all about respect, if only the rest of us are willing to learn.

The third night Bob Marley played the Starlight Amphitheater in Burbank. Towards the end of the show, Peter Tosh surprised everyone (including Marley, from my understanding) by joining Bob onstage to sing Get Up Stand Up. I was out of my head, asking people around me--who mostly seemed oblivious--if they saw what was happening here? I belive this was the one and only time Tosh and Marley played together outside of Jamaica after the (original) Wailers broke up.
Then a couple days later, I saw him open for the Stones.

A 2018 paper found that the Act reduced the health and mental health outcomes of Latin-American undocumented immigrants in the United States by escalating their fear that they would be deported.
In addition, this policy has been criticized by the Journal on Migration and Human Security for imposing overwhelming hurdles on refugees seeking asylum in the United States. These hurdles, such as mandatory detention and application deadlines, are argued to undermine the obligations the United States has under the Refugee Convention Protocols of 1967.
Furthermore, a paper in the Journal on Migration and Human Security analyzed a 2011 test conducted by the Migration Policy Institute aimed at exploring any negative externalities the 287(g) program had on the communities of Frederick County, Maryland. The journal found that, after recording arrests by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, there was evidence pointing towards racial profiling against Hispanics in the area. The scope of the law's authority was judged by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2022 Biden v. Texas ruling, which found in a 5-4 decision that the President had the direct authority to regulate the law's Migrant Protection Protocols without approval from Congress.

(1,972 posts)Most palenques were destroyed, because they set a bad example, but when the colonialists were unable to destroy a palenque (they were very difficult and dangerous to destroy, according to historians), they entered into treaties that sought to control their immigration/refugee policies.
I've bolded the references to refugees. (The Wikipedia article has a big blooper later on, where it asserts that there are no other surviving palenques. My wife's palenque survives to this day as well.)
If you ever visit Cartagena, be sure to allot a couple of days to swing by Palenque de San Basilio. It's very close, and no visit to Cartagena is complete without it.
San Basilio de Palenque
Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Basilio_de_Palenque
San Basilio de Palenque or Palenque de San Basilio, often referred to by the locals simply as Palenke, is a Palenque village and corregimiento in the Municipality of Mahates, Bolivar in northern Colombia. Palenque was the first free African town in the Americas, and in 2005 was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.[1]
History
Spaniards introduced enslaved Africans in South America through the Magdalena River Valley. Its mouth is close to the important port of Cartagena de Indias where ships full of Africans arrived. Some Africans escaped and set up Palenque de San Basilio, a town close to Cartagena. This community began in 1619, when Domingo Biohó led a group of about 30 runaways into the forests, and defeated attempts to subdue them. Biohó declared himself King Benkos, and his palenque of San Basilio attracted large numbers of runaways to join his community. His Maroons defeated the first expedition sent against them, killing their leader Juan Gómez. The Spanish arrived at terms with Biohó, but later they captured him, accused him of plotting against the Spanish, and had him hanged.[2]
They tried to free all enslaved Africans arriving at Cartagena and were quite successful. Therefore, the Spanish Crown issued a Royal Decree (1691), guaranteeing freedom to the Palenque de San Basilio Africans if they stopped welcoming new escapees. But runaways continued to escape to freedom in San Basilio. In 1696, the colonial authorities subdued another rebellion there, and between 1713-7. Eventually, the Spanish agreed to peace terms with the palenque of San Basilio, and in 1772, this community of maroons was included within the Mahates district, as long they no longer accepted any further runaways

Just guessing...

(11,010 posts)At least he thinks so. And he is missing the good times.
But in this instance, I got a kick out of his quoting Jay-Z. It was pretty relevant. In discussing Trump with his guest, he quoted the line "Im not a businessman, Im a business, man, which fitted pretty well with their discussion of a Trump-signed check constituting a business record, and how stupid it was for Trump to personally sign it.
I think his guest got a kick out of it too.

(105,866 posts)is so problematic. No one wants to watch guests be embarrassed nor have a very serious discussion derailed that way. Those who are misinterpreting the critical comments toward Ari are missing the point--at least for me. I like that he has musical segments/interviews of performers in the show. But intermixing (by interjecting song lyrics) in a way that derails the subject matter at hand or creates confusion for both guest and audience is not the way to do it.

(16,082 posts)He was born in 1980. It's what he grew up listening to, no different from the relationship many DU'ers have with early rock 'n roll, the Beatles, Motown, etc.
I do think he interjects the rap lyrics/rapper references at inappropriate times because it's clear when his guests are too old to have listened to rap or have more than a passing knowledge of who these rappers/hip hop artists are.

(4,616 posts)Exactly what is "too old" to have listened to rap? The stereo typing and wild assumptions gong on in this tread is astounding.
hlthe2b
(105,866 posts)And IF they do, the way to do so is to preface the interjection with the fact that they have had some prior discussions and he knows they too are fans of ... (i.e., whatever genre music and lyrics or other textual lines he wants to quote). Then there is context and not merely a distracting comment that derails the discussion.
inthewind21
(4,616 posts)are ASSUMING the people he books aren't aware of who he is and have no clue at all a song lyric might come up before the interview is done. Unless of course you are making the claim that his guests inform you personally of their shock over a song lyric. So, do carry on with your lecture about "problematic assumptions."

(16,082 posts)My obseration and experience is that after a certain age, your taste in music gets kind of set in stone. You don't really listen to or are interested in new music or the artists who make it.

(54,542 posts)I don't interject it when I'm doing my job. I can't imagine anyone would care. Why would Melber? He does it because he thinks it makes him look cool, only it doesn't.

(105,866 posts)And when he tries, he bends so over backward to explain the counterview of the opponents--giving it such equal weight it defeats the entire analysis. Not all things are equal and it should fall to him to make the distinction-- discussing the weakness of both POV.
He can do a good job holding some of the RW attorneys, pundits, and other apologists' feet to the fire. I give him that. But unfortunately, he does so only after the audience's eyes have probably rolled back in their heads from the litany of RW memes and false claims.
