Ahead of the rally, Texas newspaper The Houston Chronicle published a scathing editorial that suggests it is not a coincidence that Trump is appearing in Waco for the first time just days after calling for his supporters to protest his apparent upcoming indictment.
Since the deadly 1993 siege involving members of David Koresh's Branch Davidian cult and the FBI ended in a huge fire at the Mount Carmel Center, the Waco massacre has been seen as a symbol of government overreach.
Trump and other Republicans say that any arrest of the former president would be proof of the "weaponization" of the federal government by the Biden administration and claim that criminal investigations into him are politically motivated.
"Trump doesn't do subtle; dog-whistle messages are not his style," The Chronicle editorial board wrote. "The more apt metaphor is the blaring air horn of a Mack 18-wheeler barreling down I-10."

(108,700 posts)I called back in like 2020 that if he goes, he's going to go out in a fiery blaze of glory, like David Koresh did. When I saw the news of the Waco announcement, I started laughing so damn hard because this is exactly what I predicted!
He's far too cowardly for anything like that. It's true that he craves violence and destruction, but he wants to watch it on TV from a safe distance.
If it looks like he's going to do any real time, he will bolt. He will run like a rabbit to anyplace that will shelter him. Maybe Russia.

But Donald being Donald cannot be happy and content without massive amounts of media attention and will not recede into the woodwork. His attention seeking does not go well with Putin, Donald slips off a 6th floor balcony. THE END.

(80,744 posts)It is reported that Trump is also struggling to get GOP figures to appear as a guest speakers at the Waco rally amid suggestions the New York grand jury are gearing up to vote on whether to indict the former president in the coming days.
The names of other speakers in Waco have still not been confirmed by Trump's team, but several Texas Republicans have confirmed they will not be attending.
Aides for Rep. Troy Nehls, who has endorsed Trump for 2024, told Insider he cannot attend the rally as he has an engagement in Washington D.C. that day.
Rep. Pete Sessions, a Waco native, also has prior engagements on March 25, with Rep. Michael McCaul, and state GOP chairman Matt Rinaldi also saying they are unable to attend.
Waco Mayor Dillon Meek, will be another absentee as he is attending a centennial banquet for the 10th Court of Appeals on Saturday. He expressed concern that the event will once again highlight the Branch Davidian tragedy that the local community has spent decades striving to move on from..........................

(58,785 posts)and way too soon to be suicidal. (I admit his trying to force the driver to head to the Capitol on J6 was a surprise to me.)
It seems obvious that he chose Waco as an obvious PR/incitement stunt because the Branch Davidian event is a big deal to the anti-government far right, including DVE. Timothy McVeigh cited it as a main reason for Oklahoma, it's big to the militia movement, etc. He's trying to inflame civil unrest by equating what the evil Democratic government is doing "to" him with how they view Waco. Including that Koresh's followers resisted (to the death as it turned out, whether they intended that or not) to save their leader from arrest.
If more came out of it (very unlikely), this psychopath (I believe -- how many more than a million dead Americans, as well as permanently traumatized children, do we need?) would only count the bodies for what they say about devotion to HIM.
But he would be elsewhere, plotting next moves depending on results.
He's going to be disappointed in them.
