PA: Can Republicans win again in Montgomery County? The new GOP chair shares his approach.

How do you energize a Republican Party that keeps losing in the Philadelphia suburbs?

In Montgomery County, the GOP is betting on a Comcast executive and self-described workhorse. Christian Nascimento, 49, of Lower Providence, became the county’s new GOP chair this month.

His election comes as both parties prepare for local races this year. Democrats have held a 2-1 majority on the county board of commissioners since 2012. And Republican Commissioner Joe Gale, who holds the seat reserved for the minority party, has been bashing the party since he was first elected in 2015.

In statewide elections, Democrats have run up big margins in the suburbs, far outpacing Republican gains in rural areas. There are about three registered Democrats for every two registered Republicans in the county, according to state data.

Nascimento — a vice president of product at Comcast and former Methacton school board president who ran for Congress last year — said he knows reversing the trend won’t be easy.

the seat that the fucking loon Joe Gale holds for what is now the 1 (R) County Commissioner seat, used to be the one that Tweety's brother - Jim Matthews had.

The few "moderates" who were left in the area like the (R) "hero" of the 2020 election here - former Philly Commissioner Al Schmidt (who left after that debacle and death threats from the 45-cult, became the head of the long-running election organization "Committee of 70", and then recently left that to be nominated as PA's Secretary of State by (D) governor Josh Shapiro) have been overtaken by the loons. Folks might recall his testimony (twice) at J6 hearings -

He was also awarded the Presidential Citizen's Medal by Joe Biden.

That type of Republican is all but extinct in the 5-county Philly metro area.

I actually had downloaded the latest registration update from the state's website this morning and Montco's numbers look like this -

County Name | County ID | Dem | Rep | No Aff | Other | Total Count of All Voters

MONTGOMERY | 2335 | 301,035 | 202,837 | 64,324 | 31,272 | 599,468

(from here (XLS spreadsheet) - https://www.dos.pa.gov/VotingElections/OtherServicesEvents/VotingElectionStatistics/Documents/currentvotestats.xls)

Montgomery County was hard to break. Many of us remember in the early '90s when Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky (mother of Chelsea Clinton's hubby Marc) finally broke into that solid red county with a blue congressional seat (what was then PA-13). From that point on, persistence finally paid off through to 2011 when 2 (D)s finanlly took the majority for the County Commissioners. There were many there in 2008 who had "Republicans for Obama" lawn signs including on my sister's block in her Montco township. It was a sight to behold back then and foretold what might happen in that election!

And what did happen is that our now new governor - Josh Shapiro, and (D) Leslie Richards (who later left to work in the Gov. Tom Wolf admin to be replaced by Shapiro's new Sec. of Human Services nominee - Val Arkoosh), had been elected to give (D)s the majority for the Commissioners in the 2011 election giving them a (D) majority in 2012.

I lived in Montco for nearly 40 years. What an amazing transformation because I remember in Bala Cynwyd being one of the very few democrats who voted in a primary. The older folk told me that you had to register Rethug if you needed civic assistance and I said the hell with that. When I left, Narberth was Dem for the first time in like 200 years. 😁👍

One of my mother's uncles lived in North Hills for many years and they ended up apolitical. I know that all around the various townships, Democrats had to "hide" their political leanings and even register (R) if they wanted the volunteer fire department to show up if they had a fire or to not be bombarded by bogus "citations" for idiotic infractions (cracks in sidewalk, grass too high, etc).

It was a slog to "blue up" that County but I am hoping it stays that way. Thankfully both Gale brothers LOST their races!

As long as the GOP around here embraces the MAGat movement, they will be toast.
