The Minnesota House of Representatives passed a bill early Friday by a vote of 68-62 that would prevent state courts or officials from complying with child removal requests, extraditions, arrests or subpoenas related to gender-affirming health care that a person receives in Minnesota.
Physicians who practice gender-affirming care in Minnesota and families whove sought it out for their transgender children or teenagers said it would go a long way to ensure that they can continue to access treatment without fear of other states laws getting in the way.
They also said it would send a message to transgender people that they are welcome in Minnesota.
Eight states Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Mississippi, South Dakota, Tennessee and Utah have issued all out bans on gender-affirming care for transgender youth, including medication and surgical services. Meanwhile, Arizona has outlawed surgical treatments and dozens of other states have bans under consideration.

(2,809 posts)A few dinosaur were still roaming the planet when even as a grade schooler I could see no academic value in a series of rinky-dink schoolbooks named "Dick and Jane". My wishful thinking at the time would be to gather and burn them all in a pile.
I witnessed those idiot classmates getting their "redneck", stereotyped gender roles reinforced. The same crap that turned the males into goofball bullies indefinitely.
To this day that series of idiotic books remains the root of so much of the "un-woke" passions, in my view from under the freeway bridge. Banning books is fascist crap in any context, but there were some that would be best left forgotten and erased from many of my generation's early influences.
There was literally a restaurant sign in San Francisco at a significant later time that gave me a chuckle, simultaneously saying "you're welcome here" and I spent some of what little money I had on a cuppajoe there as a teen gay runaway. It was "Orphan Andy's". Later I learned that was indeed quite as meaningful to it's instigator.
Sometimes in the darkness created by the bigot brigade, the victim looks for the lit glimmers of hope.
Kudos, Minnesota.

(3,677 posts)In fact I refused to learn to read them. I went to an experimental school that allowed me to move forward with my class. They finally gave me something interesting to read in a summer school speed reading course. Went from grade 2 reading to 9th grade level in one summer. But Ive never forgotten those Duck and Jane books. I hated them.
