Republicans in the Idaho House of Representatives blocked a bill that would have supplied free menstrual products to public school students in grades 6-12, calling it liberal and woke.
SNIP-
The bill was sponsored by Republican Rod Furniss, who emphasized it would benefit low-income girls, as those who cannot afford period products often skip school on those days to avoid embarrassment.
Its not a lot of money in the states budget, Furniss said in a committee hearing. Today is a step to preserve womanhood, to give it a chance to start right, to not be embarrassed or feel alienated or ashamed, or to feel like they need to stay home from school due to period poverty.
Idaho's legislation was struck down Monday after a tied 35-35 vote, with ten of the nays from conservative women. Republican Barbara Ehardt said that using language such as period poverty and menstrual equity constituted woke terms. Heather Scott added that the bill was a very liberal policy" that was turning Idaho into a "nanny state," and that schools are "obsessed with the private parts of our children."

(24,974 posts)These supplies should be available at the nurse's office routinely. I think they were at my schools growing up in the 70's and 80's. No more controversial than band-aids or whatever.

(6,154 posts)I mean, who wants their daughter to know about menstruation? You let one girl do it, and pretty soon they'll all be doing it.

When I was a poor young girl, frequently we could not afford proper menstrual pads. We improvised by folding and refolding toilet paper in long swatches that could be tucked into the elastic waists of underpants. Of course, these would become soaked pretty fast, and usually they fell into the toilet during urination. Naturally, we had to do something. Creating pools of blood on chairs or floors is generally not an approved school activity.

It works.

(7,794 posts)They literally do not see poverty. Its not in their experience. They cannot speak to injustice when they deny its existence. One would think it humanly impossible to deny the current obvious reality. The bottom half of America is secretly renamed by "conservative" economists, "the bottom 10%" in order to hide the fact of their near majority because that would be admitting how Republicans are a certain and perpetual, statistical minority.

(2,403 posts)poverty in Idaho. And these areas of poverty have very large numbers of poor children living in them. There would be plenty of families thankful for a little help. But, No Thanks, we wouldn't want these people to become too dependent on government largess (Warning sarcasm alert!). Or even worse, they could become WOKE!
How dare anyone suggest that there is "period poverty" in Idaho.

(69,532 posts)that is what these jerks want to have young girls to stay at home. Forget about getting educated

(255,532 posts)We now have educated women as governors, senators, SCOTUS justices, state attorney generals, not to mention vice president - and making important decisions!

(43,457 posts)Not having a pad and having to beg for one is humiliating. Folding toilet paper to keep from bleeding thru your clothes is enough to make you want to stay home.
Any woman who doesn't realize this or doesn't care to prevent other women from going thru this is lacking in basic empathy. Shame

(8,251 posts)They dont want to provide school lunches.
They prefer young girls stay home instead of being in school.
During the formula shortage, they voted against providing formula to babies.
These people are despicable.
If only poor folks that vote republican would realize that, every now and then, government should do more than just own the libs.
