But the latest Yahoo News/YouGov survey also shows that most Americans don't think Trump should be allowed to serve as president again if convicted.

A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll one of the first conducted after former President Donald Trump was indicted Thursday for his role in paying hush money to a porn star shows Trump surging to his largest-ever lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, his likely 2024 GOP primary challenger, as Republican voters rally around the only president in U.S. history to face criminal charges.
In the previous Yahoo News/YouGov survey, which was conducted less than two weeks ago, Trump (47%) led DeSantis (39%) by eight percentage points in a head-to-head matchup among registered voters who are Republicans or Republican-leaning independents. As recently as February, it was DeSantis who was narrowly ahead of Trump, 45% to 41%.
But the new, post-indictment poll suddenly finds Trump lapping DeSantis by 26 percentage points 57% to 31% in a one-on-one contest. The former president even attracts majority support (52%, up from 44% previously) when pitted against a wider, 10-candidate field of declared and potential GOP challengers, while DeSantis plummets to 21% (down from 28%).
No one else cracks double digits.

(32,093 posts)It wasn't in 2016 or 2020. Indies are the biggest block in many big states now. And they vote for someone in a two person race,
In the latest Quinnipiac poll Biden only leads Trump 48% 46% and DeSantis leads Biden 48% to 46%.

(65,227 posts)But, this poll is of REPUBLICAN voters in a hypothetical primary.
Many states only allow registered party members to vote in a primary.
We don't know the denominator in this poll, but it doesn't seem likely to include independent voters.
In addition, both Pew & Gallup show people acknowledging a republican party affiliation is 24%, not 30.
Dems are about 28%, independent voters about 46%. The other 2% are spread among a number of alternative parties.

(5,445 posts)Being elected is his only chance to escape serving time and he can pardon himself for his federal crimes as well, not the state ones though. Too bad for him that the very indictments that will give him the GOP nomination should make him unelectable.

(5,104 posts)At the same time, a Trump nomination--with more indictments likely coming--just make his already dismal prospects running against Joe Biden all the worse.
I'm never one to get over-confident, but Trump being the nominee dooms the Republicans in my estimation.

If we're in a recession in Fall of 24... or if inflation is still out of control, he can absolutely win.
You are sooo correct.

(5,445 posts)Trump, with the baggage of indictments, would reduce their chances even with conditions that overall would favor a GOP win.

(10,843 posts)This is the first of multiple indictments coming down the track; we don't even know the content of the charges yet. This will be a slow grind with the Georgia case, the defamation case, the SEC case, the document theft debacle and the DOJ case into the January 6th insurrection.
The True Believers can beat their breasts all they want. But Donald Trump is under the gun and there's a lot to be uncovered, revealed, and much of it will be unpleasant and difficult to spin.
The Law grinds very fine once the gears start moving. There's no place for The Donald to hide!

(15,669 posts)These polls reflect more on people deciding they dont like Tiny D, than growing support for Trump.
Here is the question they should ask Republican and R leaning voters:
In the 2024 presidential race, who would you prefer to be the Republican nominee?
a. Trump
b. some other Republican
I think Trump would lose to a generic Republican by a landslide.
