North Carolina Republicans Look To Ax Participation Trophies With New Bill

Three North Carolina Republicans are supporting efforts to do away with participation trophies in government-run youth sports leagues.

The GOP-backed bill filed on Thursday would bar local government-operated youth sports or recreation groups from giving “awards for participants based solely on their participation” and restricts awards to those “based on identified performance achievements.”

The bill is sponsored by North Carolina state Sens. Timothy D. Moffitt, Eddie D. Settle and Bobby Hanig.

The proposed ban would require the support of the state Senate, House and a signature from North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) to become law.

A bunch of dime-store autocrats with nothing better to do with their lives than tell other people how to live theirs.

Why would anyone even care?

Maybe they should ban guns instead so the kids can live to play?

A new law in North Carolina will ban the state from basing coastal policies on the latest scientific predictions of how much the sea level will rise, prompting environmentalists to accuse the state of disrespecting climate science.

snip

The bill's passage in June triggered nationwide scorn by those who argued that the state was deliberately blinding itself to the effects of climate change. In a segment on the "Colbert Report," comedian Stephen Colbert mocked North Carolina lawmakers' efforts as an attempt to outlaw science. "If your science gives you a result you don't like, pass a law saying the result is illegal. Problem solved," he joked.

Here is the article I am quoting. Basically, the General Assembly are saying that they will not accept any attempts to try and predict the rising water levels because they don't want that to get out and inflate insurance prices (unless they are the owners of the insurance company I bet) as well as drive potential buyers/investors away. Of course, it is all about money, not reality with that bunch. We all used to say that they were trying to legislate the ocean so that it won't dare rise. They are (mostly) mental in the G.A. of N.C.

Look, I was raised on the Outer Banks and I can tell you it is insane that they can insure anything against the ocean, especially on a barrier island. Now, they want to ignore the information and just pretend that things will always be like this. Who cares that inlets open and close through the barriers all the time. Who cares that, other than the Wright Memorial and Jockey's Ridge, the island is about five to ten feet above the water level. One good surge would clear most of the islands. When one builds in such a place, one gets what one deserves. Yes, my family had a 'cottage' there for many, many years. (I use quotes because it was a big two story thing that on occasion housed 15-20 people for weeks on end.) And, yes, we knew the risks. There was no insurance for such a thing back then. And, we did not care. But to just ignore the science altogether and then to dare to act surprised and to crawl to the government for a 'bailout' when it all goes under water is more proof that one party in this country has truly lost their minds.

15. You know, participation trophies/certificates/ribbons do mean something

Kids who aren't good at sports KNOW they aren't, but recognition for staying the course and doing their best encourages them to continue instead of quitting because it's hard.

That is a good lesson for kids to learn. It is of value to society at large.

Kids who are in speech (my boys are band/theater kids) all get certificates that they participated whether they placed in competitions or not. Why? Because getting up in front of people to be judged is hard and they do it anyway. They do their best and they work hard.

The kid who just gets a participation award knows they are not the star player, but they also know that they did it, they got through the whole season (or whatever) and didn't quit. They should take pride in that.

It takes a lot more to keep doing something that you aren't good at than it does to excel and do that thing, because no one praises the "participation" kids, except for that one moment when they get recognized for trying even when they fail.

That does mean something.

17. What about tshirts and the like?

People that run marathons and Iron Mans etc usually have tshirts or hats and stuff that say like "Iron Man Maui 2022", but if they didn't win or come in whatever arbitrary place is deemed acceptable for recognition (3rd place? Can 5th place get a trophy?) should they be allowed to wear the tshirt? After all, it's really nothing but a participation trophy.
