(5,009 posts)Watch Now: Charles Manson's 5 Most Outrageous TV Interviews
- snip -
3. TODAY WITH HEIDI SCHULMAN (1987)
- snip -
Among Charlies most volcanic declarations were these doozies:
Ive never killed anyone. Maybe I should have killed 400 or 500 people. Then I would have felt better. Then I should have felt like I really offered society something.
You know, if I wanted to kill somebody Id take this book and beat you to death with it and wouldnt feel a thing. Itd be just like walking to the drug store.
Believe me, if I started murdering people thered be none of you left.
Finally, upon parting, Manson turned to Schulman and said, You know youre about 10 pounds overweight, dont you? Im just telling you. Thats all. Im just sayin.
- snip -
This interview still haunts me - so chilling, and so chillingly trump like.

(3,150 posts)He's the Manson of politics. I remember years ago when they interviewed Manson. I think it was in 1989. I was playing in bands and some of the musicians I knew were walking around quoting some the stupid crap that Manson said. I never understood the appeal. The guy just said whatever stupid crap popped into his head and some idiot would go around repeating it like it was cool. TFG and MTG have the same appeal, which is NONE. They all need to be sent packing. I hope MTG and TFG both go to prison for what they have done.

Essentially she knew that Nancy and top advisors would be running the government if he was re-elected, but she stayed silent. I lost a lot of respect for her after that, though its fair to say that the whole White House press pool also stayed silent even though most of them would have observed Reagans decline but decided that voters should not know that they were voting for a man who was developing serious cognitive issues to lead the free world.

So they hide their dirty little secrets for them.... without even being asked. And they publicize the propaganda in the name of fair and equitable journalism. Cons and manipulation.

(40,324 posts)What I saw was a confused old man who didn't know where the hell he was or what he was doing there.
They pushed Reagan behind the podium and it was lights, camera, action! A bit of the old acting skills flickered to life and he managed to say a few lines. Then he was gone.
Astonished I went home and turned on the television news. Had anyone seen what I had seen? Nope. All they showed was the clip, and ha, ha, everything is wonderful and wasn't it great the President was visiting!
The newspaper reporting was no different.
I began to doubt myself, thinking yeah, it must be exhausting for an old guy to travel around like that on Air Force One and limos.
As it turned out, what I witnessed was reality.
Not that it mattered. Even before Reagan began to lose his marbles he'd sold his soul to the devil and enthusiastically embraced his greatest acting role as a fascist meat puppet.

(5,104 posts)and a few word that MTG expressed as well. Shall we?
Here are some from Stahl:
Known for her sharp tongue and radical views
has a history of believing in conspiracy theories
Words that have been said about you: crazy, Q clown, looney tune, unhinged, moron, pretty ugly stuff
People say you are Trump in high heel,..many consider MTGs behavior outlandish, even thuggish
Thats glib, thats glib, what does that mean?
Greene complains about the news media for harping on things she did in the past, likeas in this video [rolls tape] chasing after the survivor of the Parkland FL school shooting [then showing the evidence of Greene berating a shooting survivor]
And things shes says that are over-the top, like the Democrats are the part of pedophiles"
They are NOT pedophiles! What would you day that?!
Wow! [roll-eyes]...
Shortly after she arrived in Washington the Democratic-led House outside her from her committees because of her past endorsement of violence against some Democrats and her embrace of Q-Anon [rolls tape as evidence]
Did you ever apologize to Nancy Pelosi for the bullet to her head? [displays a liked Facebook post calling for Pelosi to be shot]
Did you apologize for your position on Parkland Florida [shows support for Facebook calling the shootings a false flag attack as Greene denies it]
Here are some of the things youve said: That America should have a Christian government, that abortion should be banned nationally, that you want to defend the FBI? You want immigration to stop, you want 4 years, youve said those things, correct? MTG agrees]
The Constitution, the very first amendment, prohibits having a religion in government
The latest nation poll shows her approval rating at just 29%.
And here are some words for Marjorie Taylor Greene's own mouth:
Margorie is crazy. Margorie is extreme. Margorie is a right-wing extremist
They call me racist. They call me anti Semitic
What made me run for Congress when [sic] I saw the Republicans in Congress, the House and the Senate, completely fail to deliver the agenda that we had all voted for
They failed us.. Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, yea, those types, Mitt Romney, Im not even sure why he calls himself a Republican.

Seriously, there's enough good analysis here on other DU threads for anyone on this thread to launch a major criticism of why CBS and TV news should NEVER be normalizing the Freedom Caucus and the rest of Koch-bought GOP leaders.
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)MAGA extremism was not "normalized" in my estimation, rather it was exposed.
That's the precisely the same way that Joe McCarthy was taken down.
ancianita
(42,763 posts)You saw it, right? And you think it did more to expose MTG than to normalize her?
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)I think Lesley Stahl and 60 Minutes did the nation a great service.
We would benefit from greater exposure of the populist extremist loons who are a threat to liberal democracy in this nation.
Ms. Toad
(38,090 posts)that isn't already extremely widely known about her?
The media already gives an enormous amont of exposure to Greene, and other popular extremist loons. Giving her a respected national platform so spread those extremist views helps normalize them.
ancianita
(42,763 posts)Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)Left-of-center political junkies or the types of everyday Americans who watch 60 Minutes and are likely unaware of the myriad examples of nuttery that Stahl exposed? And that was only scratching the surface. I wish Stahl had the full hour, which still wouldn't be enough time.
I don't think any aspect of the 60 Minutes profile "normalized" Greene. She came off very badly.
Ms. Toad
(38,090 posts)Anyone inclined to think badly of her already does. There absolutely no reason to give her a platform on a well-respected mainstream news show.
Remember all those people who wanted Trump to be candidate in 2016 because no one would actually vote for him? You seriously underestimate the stupidity of people inclined to like the likes of Trump or Greene. Treating her a person deserving of national attention definitely normalized her, now matter how she came off in your perception.
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)even if they have a limited understanding how deep and how wide Greene's extremist behavior and crazy actions have been. Stahl's report may have added to these people knowledge of specifics, but few if any people who disliked her before seeing the program are likely to change any minds. That's absolutely true.
But there are many people in America who don't know what Greene is all about, and exposing her nuttery to a mass audience is vital. That you reference the "stupidity of people" should--I would think--lead you to embrace informing these people, so they are not sucked in to supporting this contemptible and dishonest bigot in the way some went for Trump. We've unfortunately been down that road.
Greene was not "platformed," instead her nuttery was exposed to scrutiny and she came off looking very bad.
What Greene "deserves" is close scrutiny. She is already gaining political power. She is not remotely "normal," and the 60 Minutes profile did not "normalize" her. It did the exact opposite.
60 Minutes is a well-respected mainstream news show because they put forward programs such as these. Americans trust them as a source and Lesley Stahl validated that trust.
This is an important work of journalism.
Ms. Toad
(38,090 posts)You can expose someone and scrutinize them closely without giving them a national platform. Rather than dissuading anyone from supporting her, this fiasco simply amplified her message.
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)It's the same deal.
Should we fail to prosecute Trump for his crimes because, being the grifter that he is, he will attempt to enrich himself in the process? I think the obvious answer is no.
So not surprise that Greene pulls the same stunts. Lesley Stahl referred to Greene as "Trump in a dress," and that's pretty spot-on.
We can not be deterred from going after populist extremists who embrace violence because those people will try to fundraise off being exposed.
I disagree entirely that people won't be dissuaded from supporting her. The piece was very damning. The 60 Minutes audience is probably made up of the most persuadable cohort of people in this country. And these people tune into the show as a source they've trusted for a long time.
I think Stahl did an excellent job of laying out the case--as good as anyone could do in 13 minutes (which is really insufficient time) and we ought to be thankful for her service to liberal democracy.

(7,540 posts)then the interview may be an eye opener, like 'Wow, this lady is a bit of a nut case!'
That is the good part of it.
If you have seen her brand of extremism before, like we all here have, you might resent the free exposure she got, you might even think she was normalised to a certain extent.
Good or bad, depends on your perspective.
I still think 60 minutes should have recorded it but not aired it.
