Older DUers familiar with the "Beat Generation" will remember Willam Burroughs. I'm paying tribute to the author of "The Naked Lunch" on Arraigment Day, knowing that few here recall the rebels that followed the Silent Generation, and were known as "beatniks" in their day. With Richard Nixon serving as vice president, they knew something was bery wrong in America.
Today reminds me of when Nixon was forced from the presidency.
Is everybody in? Is everybody in? The fun has begun.

(79,257 posts)but I am convinced that Burroughs was anticipating the psychosis that Trump is experiencing today. I could be wrong, of course.
Or the general psychosis here too

(79,257 posts)I've enjoyed a friendship with David Peel ("& the Lower East Side Gang"
I played with them once in Woodstock. I always thought that David was the "missing link" between Beatniks and Hippies.

(35,176 posts)I am so sick of this man (I know, we all are) but I cannot look away from this. I will not be happy until the man is removed from society.
I have heard some interesting things about him, WB, but have forgotten more than I heard. I believe he is mentioned in the book (one of many many) Cows Are Freaky When They Look At You: An Oral History of the Kaw Valley Hemp Pickers. It has been a long time since I read that, oh what memories.

(79,257 posts)told me he turns the news off the second that either Trump or MTG come on. I've purposely limited how much of those two or their ilk that I watch. I imagine Richard Nixon, looking down from hell at Trump, shaking his head in disgust.

(35,176 posts)a while back except for things like this. It makes me itchy. I have to admit, I still get the news and get mad, but it is a different animal than it is getting it for hours and hours told by people who you question what their biases are. I always enjoyed listening to the news but it has changed so much.
Funny about Nixon. Did you ever figure there would be anything worse here that Watergate and Nixon and his minions? Regan might probably be because he had enough backing to do some rotten stuff, Bush.....it really is a constant game of wrecking things and trying to get our heads above water. As soon as we can breathe we get sunk again. It is tiresome. I want to see this man suffer and that is not something I usually ever really want but this guy,,,he has had enough happy in his life on everyone else's backs. Let him finish it in custody.
I have a clear memory of the night Nixon resigned, thinking our country would never be subjected to anyone as bad, much less worse.
But soon there was Reagan, Bush the Elder & Bush the W. It seemed that "I didn't think it could get worse than Nixon!" became my mantra. Yet I never thought that anyone with Trump's character could become president.

(35,176 posts)How in the hell did this happen? I know all the usual reasons and I get it but I do not understand how we find ourselves here. We let so much go when we actually had the power. There was so much to clean up each time and so much being very careful to not make the others angry we just never did what we needed to do.
I was in and out when Trump's lawyers were speaking. Sounded like BS to me what I heard. Now I feel worried he WILL get away with this and be allowed to run free and perhaps take over again. *because apparently we do not think with our real brains anymore*

(79,257 posts)of confidence in, and respect for, D.A. Bragg. Yet I recognize that there is a very real potential for the case to be appealed up to the US Supreme Court. And I consider the USSC to be corrupted by the christian right. Even though the federal courts have not supported or enabled Trump in recent years, I still have concerns.
The chances of his ever being elected again are not as much of a concern, though I think he might well get the republican nomination. However, by the 4th of July, I anticipate that Mr. Smith will bring charges on one of the two cases being investigated. I had thought it would be the stolen documents case by June; however, it appears that recent testimony indicated that further investigation was required to identify exactly which donors he showed classified documents to. Since some came from foreign friends, there is an increased need to know everyone he gave access to.
The January 6 investigation, I think, is also wrapping up. Several of Trump's administration are confronte wit Mr. Smith saying testify or face potential indictment. I exclude Pence from that list, though he will be testifying soon. But I think he dollowed legal advice, and stayed clear of criminal actions. Still, he betrayed the country by not speaking up pre-J6.

(42,426 posts)But then we found out the Ford gave him an unconditional pardon, and it sort of ruined it.
I was mad as hell when Ford did that. Furious. But during the 1990s, reading a variety of materials about it, I've concluded that Nixon told Haig that he planned to demand "national security" documents for his defense, knowing that the DOJ could not allow them to become part of a court record. Haig, of course, was the Joint Chiefs' man in the White House, and he was concerned any conflict like that would inflict further damage to the country. Hence, he got Ford to agree to pardon Nixon.
I think that it can be debated if Nixon could have been convicted. I think that the most likely outcome would have been his poor health would have led to his death before it went to court. For a guy who claimed to be his best under pressure, he was melting under Watergate. I make no position on if his death would have been good or bad for the country.

(18,362 posts)The philosophers and beat poets I would like to give a DU shoutout to:
Robert Anton Wilson
Timothy Leary
Ram Dass
Alan Watts
Allen Ginsberg
To name a few of my favorites
They would have had a field day with the current state of affairs. Especially the first two, Robert and Timothy wouldve explained the hive mentality weve been subjected to by these dark forces.

(79,257 posts)Burroughs wrote about "the Ugly Spirit," which he viewed as an individual experience. I think we've witnessed it infecting the hive.
I find it hilarious that those around Trump claim that he welcomed this day. Bullshit. He is a sociopath, having numerous personality factors from Cluster B. Among these are the narcissistic ones that have made him fear public humiliation. And today was his worst fears rising to the surface.

The film clip I saw of Donald walking out was hilarious. If I saw a boxer walking towards the ring with that look, I'd expect them to submit in the first round. Were I to see a man in prison doing the same, it would be "dead man walking."
