Charlie Sykes: He is the only man in American presidential history who could pay off two porn stars, and orchestrate a criminal conspiracy to cover it up in the final crucial days of a presidential election, and have people think that it was trivial.'
After seven years of pussy grabbing, mendacity, incitements, obstruction, shooting people in the middle of 5th Avenue, and an endless torrent of lies, the smart kids still look at the criminal charges and wonder if thats all there is to it?

(8,020 posts)Knocking down the felonies to smaller charges and the GOP is probably still paying his defense also. Let's hope more charges come down the pipeline soon.

(10,303 posts)... if he used his own cash and paid off the people involved directly.
But he has to do shelll companies, lawyer workarounds and creative accounting. Just how broke was he really? A guy worth billions you say? And he personally himself couldn't afford a few hundred thousand to pay off people?
Yup. He's broke AND stupid.

(3,629 posts)The news outlets are all acting like the problem is that he paid off a porn star. That's not the problem. The problem is how he funneled the money to do it.

He is STILL a conservative voice, despite his dislike for Trump.

Why is everyone torturing themselves as to the various possible bases of a felony bump up in the Trump indictment- a second false biz filing intended to further the first false biz filing suffices, and so on.

Misdemeanor to cover a misdemeanor becomes felony?

yes, that is the law in NY; if you are committing one crime to further or cover up another crime it is more serious, and thus it is a felony, even if the two are misdemeanors.
People, including Bragg, had been talking about these felony "bump ups"
NY State Election law violation
Federal Election law violation (would have been setting a precedent to use Federal violation to bump a state misdemeanor)
Tax violation by the Trump business expensing the Cohen payments which would reduce taxes by more than $3,000 (a felony)
There's no question the 34 charges were misdemeanors.
But with Weissmann's point, if accurate (and it very like it coming from Weissmann), they can nail him on these 34 felonies or the bulk of them if there are other technicalities raised.
A % in the public polling think what Trump did was unethical not not a violation of the law. 34 convictions of misdemeanors would alter that some. 34 convictions of felonies would cement public perception further.
Bragg appears to have brought a case that is quite solid but I don't think he's close to done. This is just his first volley.
