Yesterday, there was a mayoral race in the biggest town in our county. My wife & I grew up in that town.
The guy who won with 62% of the vote got 8,500 votes. A total of around 14,000 votes were cast.
There are nearly 160,000 people in this city, so around 115,000 voters.
A 12.2% turnout!
Pretty bad showing.

(9,099 posts)My hometown in southern Cook County did their stuff in April, too.
It's just crazy easy to forget. Yeah, there are a billion signs all over the place, but my headspace is never in election mode at that time of year. When I first started voting, November was a cinch, but my dad kept having to remind me about April elections. And even then, it was only because his best friend was also their alderman.
I've always found April such a weird placement. Holidays, spring breaks, etc. And because it's kind of off-step from national election news, I think it's easy for it to come and go without realizing.

(65,159 posts)But, we've been told forever that all politics is local, yet hardly anybody showed up for a local election!
Not that the incumbent losing is earth shaking news, just found it odd.

(65,159 posts)We live in a small town of about 6,000.
Our alderman won reelection.
He won unopposed & got 69 votes! No, I didn't miss any digits there.
The city clerk position had NOBODY even file to run in it!
There was no mayoral race, so there's that.
You folks in Wisconsin had some important stuff to turn out for. The state Supreme Court thing was a biggie.
