So I wonder, given the Wisconsin results last night, and with an eye to 2024....

will the Republicans in Congress be open to moving federal legislation that legalizes abortion? Seems like the State Parties will continue to use abortion to create more and more laws that further enrage the majority of citizens in this country. A Federal law would largely take a major issue off the table. Do you think Kevin and Mitch would do the right thing for the women in this country and possibly help their political cause in 2024?

Once again, why do some on the left continue to give Republicans the benefit of the doubt?

Of course Republicans in Congress would not be willing to do such a thing.

Do you really believe there is even a 1% chance they would?

Really?

Zero chance this ever happens, especially with McCarthy as Speaker. He will never bring such a bill up because that would be the end of his Speakership immediately.

Come on, now.

To help you out with this, yes, Republicans want to win at all costs, but if they lose their current leadership position (e.g., McCarthy) or lose in a primary to a more extreme opponent (e.g., pretty much any Republican that would ever vote to legalize abortion), they won't be winning at all costs, will they? They themselves will be losing.

The WI Republicans have been trying to float a bill that would outlaw abortion except in a few cases to try to fragment the opposition.

It's throwing out the barest of scraps to the pro-choice side and, if anything, it will fragment their own right-wing supporters because of how they view abortion.

"Okay, fine, we'll let you get an abortion if you get raped, now vote for us!" isn't the winning message you seem to think it is.

Politics these days is what the extremes are doing. People across the country look at states like South Carolina where they've restricted abortions and even talked of executing women who have them, and they see that that's what the GOP represents. It truly is a Handmaid's Tale image that drives voters to the polls all across the country. If Republicans take control of your state, this could happen there too.

So yes, the 2024 election will be about abortion above all other issues. And Republicans are left defending the most extreme amongst their party, because that's what the country knows could be next for the entire nation if the GOP gets their way. Republicans will pass a national abortion ban the minute the have the votes in Congress and the White House to do so, that's what will drive people to the polls in 2024.

But, in order for them to have any chance of taking back the WH and Senate and retain the House in 2024....I could see them cynically supporting a women's right to abortion in order to remove the issue in 2024....and, if they were to somehow, win the Senate/WH, their 1st order of business in 2025 would be to enact a national ban. Their next order of business would be to dismantle voting rights.

The bans they've enacted across the country speak louder than their words. there are victims of rape, incest, and pedophilia in Red States all over the country being forced to carry to term the children of their assaulters. There are thousands of other women too afraid to leave red states to seek the abortion care they need. No amount of lying and running will help them hide from what they have done.

It's doable though if Reps continue down this path. The country doesn't want abortion bans.
