Wow! Fuck Tennessee!

BREAKING: Tennessee Republicans just voted to expel Rep. Justin Jones simply after he stood with Tennessee gun safety protesters. Pay attention everyone. This is the literal definition of fascism. Never forget. We should all be alarmed and outraged.

Our state has a case in the SC now to allow legislatures to over rule election results. And that sure as hell is not our whole state, but if that passes, many states will be as bad as this one, and worse.

A state representative is finally in a new office after spending last year assigned in an office not much bigger than a closet.

Tennessee Rep. Gloria Johnson spent a year a conference room converted into an office, while an empty member office sat across the hall.

Johnson was recently diagnosed with myopathy, a disease affecting muscle movement, making it difficult for her to walk long distances.

Martin Niemoller, a Lutheran pastor, was at first a nationalist but after he got a taste of Nazi tactics he became an ardent opposition spokesperson.

He is, of course, famous for the poem you quoted.

============

Unfortunately for these republicans, they just made national reputations for two young leaders. Does anyone else find irony in the fact that two of the men are named "Justin."

One has a charismatic appearance and quiet but firm demeanor; the other is an eloquent speaker. What a gift he has.

While not 'expelled," Gloria Johnson is not about the shut up. She is the quintessential teacher. Who hasn't had a teacher like Gloria Johnson? It is important that a teacher be in the forefront of those speaking out against gun violence.

This won't be the last we hear of these three.

I'm in NC which is totally fucked. I know there are good people in TN, we all do. But there is a super majority of racists and fascists and they just kicked out 3 members.

it's not personal, and I only say that because I spent much of yesterday bashing the state where I live, NC. In case you didn't know, a Democrat from Charlotte switched to R giving them a super majority here.

but it's not just the legislature to blame. it's also the people.

this is from the thread i posted yesterday regarding what happened in NC:

it cannot be overstated how much the South is run on racism. people vote against their own best interests and the lowest common denominator pacifies them into voting for these FUCKS over and over. can't just blame it on the politicians, though they are very, very bad. or the media, which has failed this nation for sure. it's also the people.

I hope you're right, but I'm operating on the assumption that by 2024, we'll be a mirror image of the poorest, most ignorant, least educated, most racist, states in the country. NC used to be known as the jewel of the South, but now it's just another red blob on the map of the South.

It is no coincidence that the three most most vocal and visible Democrats in our state legislature, not only on the gun issue but abortion rights and a plethora of other issues, have been silenced and marked for expulsion.

I've said for a wile that Tennessee is the testing ground for the far right agenda. If they can pull off this kind of fascist shit here, it will be coming to other states soon enough. This isn't a one off folks, this is a shot across the bough of democracy and we cannot allow this to creep any further than it already has.

Things that WILL NOT get you expelled from the TN state legislature:
- child molestation
- domestic violence
- federal investigation
- peeing on your colleague's chair

Things that will:
- fighting to protect kids from gun violence

So, to quote Sean Connery's Oscar winning character in 'The Untouchables'...

"Now, what are you prepared to do?"

This is the question that needs to be pondered by all of us, whether we like it or not. Unfortunately, not everything has a Hollywood ending.

Just a different century and by a different name.

Same white supremacists demonstrating that they still have some forms of dominion over Black bodies.

What a shithole.

Nikita Khrushcev said the Soviet Union would bury America with the shovel America sold them.

They're getting very close to fulfilling that prediction.

In 1951, my father's business moved us from SW Mississippi to Knoxville TN where my parents lived until they left us in 2005 and 2007. I spent my summers between 1951 and 1962 in rural SW Mississippi; college in Alabama, where I learned to read. My younger brother and I left TN -- and the South -- as soon as we could and have never looked back.

Tennessee has four large cities: Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, and Memphis. These cities have a lot of Democrats and elect the few Democrats in the state legislature. The smaller cities of Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City, Cleveland, and Jackson are nothing but overgrown county seats. Recent gerrymandering has all but wiped out Democrats in the state legislature.

Outside the four big cities Tennessee is dumbass, shit-for-brains, redneck, goober muthafukahs who marry their cousins and are proud of their ignorance. And that's the smart ones.

Remember -- Pulaski TN is the home of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the KKK, and, Dayton TN is home of the Scopes Monkey Trial where a public school teacher was put on trial for teach evolution (and don't be surprised if that sorry affair repeats itself given Republican attacks on public schools).

Having grown up in rural MS and East TN I am fully acquainted with dumbass, shit-for-brains, redneck, goober muthafukahs who marry their cousins and are proud of their ignorance. I have an earned PhD in WhiteTrashOlogy.

This will BACKFIRE!

Never underestimate the power of Republicans to shoot themselves in the foot. They just did it again.

They have clearly become open Fascists. It is frightening for our country that we now have an openly Fascists party in our politics.

buddy has now been indicted and is interfering with a NY criminal investigation. Repugs squash anything they don't agree with. Now with the TN repugs and their antics today I am sad and pissed. They just gave the finger to the voters who elected Jones and Pearson. I fear fascism is here.

96. $125 million to TN - Smith & Wesson HQ's relocating
Thu Apr 6, 2023, 10:05 PM
Apr 2023
Gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson Brands is moving its headquarters to Blount County, and bringing $125 million and 750 jobs with it to East Tennessee.

Smith & Wesson will become Blount County's eighth-largest employer.

Recruiting one of the world's largest gun manufacturers is a regional and statewide economic win. Tennessee is home to 20 small arms and ammunition manufacturers and Smith & Wesson's arrival will make Tennessee No. 1 for employment in the industry, according to the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development.

I was born and raised in Kentucky, lived and worked in Mississippi for several years, and currently live in Alabama. And, oh, went to graduate school at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. There are many, many wonderful, progressive people in all of these places. Unfortunately, the absolute worst people keep getting elected to high office. Fuck those voters who put them there.

Either way, they would have begged to be re-admitted.
