(22,218 posts)the good folks aren't in the majority in TN. Certainly not the majority of voters. The majority of TN voters are getting the government they deserve. Some even like it. It's that f'ing bad in my ole home state. I wouldn't set foot back in my old stompin' grounds if my life depended on it.

(406 posts)Northern gal born and bred, but I found that there were as many right-wingers up home as in Tennessee. People just have to be more careful who they vote for. I'll bet those protesting won't miss the next vote. It's easy to be critical when you have kept up with politics but most people don't to the detriment of us all. News used to help us...Walter Cronkite and a real 60 Minutes, but we're left with entertainment politics and it is REALLY HARD sometimes to tell the difference between reality and entertainment. Easy to say Fuck when the reason for saying it has already been accomplished. I miss Tennessee. It was a lovely place for me in the early 70s and Dolly can't be completely wrong.

(22,590 posts)That state is on the brink of some major changes. The supermajority there exists because of gerrymandering, which was upheld by the previous conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Power, and seeing Tennessee right now that supermajority can destroy us. They Already stated they are gonna do more gerrymandering to assure that ass the switched parties in a blue district will Keep her power.

The same is true of the entire country, Many rural areas of all states, as well as ignorant or just plain stupid people who live in urban or suburban areas, make this kind of insanity possible.
The cure is education. -- And that's why book banning and destroying America's entire educational system, is the aim of these cave-dwelling knuckle draggers.

The mean-spirited always are a few steps ahead of us when it comes to defining and driving who and what we are. But, at some point, humanity will mature and the times we are living through will be viewed as just one more "dark age."
(This, of course assumes that humanity can survive the undeniable climate change that is quickly descending upon us.)

(13,018 posts)I am here in North Carolina. Meadows and Cawthorn. They are not our whole state. We are considered the worst maps in the country. These maps creating supermajorities that cant be voted out, will end us.
Our state has a case in the SC now to allow legislatures to over rule election results. And that sure as hell is not our whole state, but if that passes, many states will be as bad as this one, and worse.

Unfortunately for these republicans, they just made national reputations for two young leaders. Does anyone else find irony in the fact that two of the men are named "Justin."
One has a charismatic appearance and quiet but firm demeanor; the other is an eloquent speaker. What a gift he has.
While not 'expelled," Gloria Johnson is not about the shut up. She is the quintessential teacher. Who hasn't had a teacher like Gloria Johnson? It is important that a teacher be in the forefront of those speaking out against gun violence.

(31,308 posts)I'm in NC which is totally fucked. I know there are good people in TN, we all do. But there is a super majority of racists and fascists and they just kicked out 3 members.
it's not personal, and I only say that because I spent much of yesterday bashing the state where I live, NC. In case you didn't know, a Democrat from Charlotte switched to R giving them a super majority here.
but it's not just the legislature to blame. it's also the people.
this is from the thread i posted yesterday regarding what happened in NC:
it cannot be overstated how much the South is run on racism. people vote against their own best interests and the lowest common denominator pacifies them into voting for these FUCKS over and over. can't just blame it on the politicians, though they are very, very bad. or the media, which has failed this nation for sure. it's also the people.
I hope you're right, but I'm operating on the assumption that by 2024, we'll be a mirror image of the poorest, most ignorant, least educated, most racist, states in the country. NC used to be known as the jewel of the South, but now it's just another red blob on the map of the South.

I've said for a wile that Tennessee is the testing ground for the far right agenda. If they can pull off this kind of fascist shit here, it will be coming to other states soon enough. (3,835 posts)In 1951, my father's business moved us from SW Mississippi to Knoxville TN where my parents lived until they left us in 2005 and 2007. I spent my summers between 1951 and 1962 in rural SW Mississippi; college in Alabama, where I learned to read. My younger brother and I left TN -- and the South -- as soon as we could and have never looked back.
Tennessee has four large cities: Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, and Memphis. These cities have a lot of Democrats and elect the few Democrats in the state legislature. The smaller cities of Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City, Cleveland, and Jackson are nothing but overgrown county seats. Recent gerrymandering has all but wiped out Democrats in the state legislature.
Outside the four big cities Tennessee is dumbass, shit-for-brains, redneck, goober muthafukahs who marry their cousins and are proud of their ignorance. And that's the smart ones.
Remember -- Pulaski TN is the home of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, founder of the KKK, and, Dayton TN is home of the Scopes Monkey Trial where a public school teacher was put on trial for teach evolution (and don't be surprised if that sorry affair repeats itself given Republican attacks on public schools).
Having grown up in rural MS and East TN I am fully acquainted with dumbass, shit-for-brains, redneck, goober muthafukahs who marry their cousins and are proud of their ignorance. I have an earned PhD in WhiteTrashOlogy.
