A lady who was speaking on MSNBC, I did not catch her name, stated it's the intention of the boards responsible for the interim appointments in each of their respective districts, will vote to send them back to the House as early as next week if they are willing to accept the reappointment

(31,308 posts)this is not going to be a net win for the fucking republican racist fascist gun humpers then.
the House there is so lopsided already. so this was all just a show, or a way to try and convince people to voluntarily surrender their First Amendment rights?
i'm glad they will be back representing their constituencies, but puzzled about what begins now to look like a show. ?

(12,285 posts)To accept the reappointment and they will still have to be willing to run for reelection once a date is set.
Still an overtly racist House speaker and white racist Republican supermajority to fight.
Hopefully that changes in the next election.

(31,308 posts)but I assume the republicans have a vise-like hold on that the way they do in NC.

(6,619 posts)If it weren't for gerrymandering they wouldn't be holding onto their majority positions. When you look at some of statewide elections in red states, they don't match the local elections. This is how states continue to be ruled by their minority.

(7,046 posts)The two largest counties, Shelby and Davidson, have a third of the population between them, but less than half of the representation that their neighboring suburban counties have in either the state senate or house. The district lines are ridiculous, demonstrating literally the "gerrymander". I've read estimates that the redrawn lines since 2000 have cost Democrats 8 seats in the state house from each county, and another 5 or 6 across the state in other places.

The Shelby County Commission could consider reappointing Justin Pearson to his seat in the Tennessee statehouse, Chairman Mickell Lowery said Thursday.
Pearson was expelled Thursday along with fellow Democrat Justin Jones after they interrupted a floor session and used a bullhorn to lead chants for gun control. Democrat Gloria Johnson survived Thursday's expulsion vote in the House.
Vacancies can be filled on an interim basis by the county legislative body until a legislator is elected in a special election.
In Shelby County, the commission has a nine-member Democratic supermajority.

dsc
(53,397 posts)she likely would have been replaced by an appointee of a GOP controlled board which makes the fact they didn't expel her even more racist.

(24,906 posts)They only missed expelling her by one vote. It's not good optics for them though.

(16,448 posts)by sending someone from HR around a couple of days ago to tell her she'd lose her health care if she was expelled but could keep it if she resigned of her own accord. She told them 'no way, no how'.

(20,049 posts)The three lawmakers -- State Reps. Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson, who were expelled, and Rep. Gloria Johnson -- faced separate expulsion hearings Thursday for allegedly violating the chamber's rules of decorum by participating in a gun control protest at the state Capitol last week.
At one point during the protest, the trio stood at the well of the House chambers, leading chants with a megaphone. The demonstration came in the wake of the deadly Covenant School shooting in Nashville on March 27, where a former student fatally shot three children and three adults, police have said.
Days later, Tennessee Republican Reps. Bud Hulsey, Gino Bulso and Andrew Farmer sponsored the expulsion resolutions, arguing the three Democratic lawmakers "did knowingly and intentionally bring disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives through their individual and collective actions."

(38,643 posts)Like I said - I literally haven't had a minute in the last 24 hours to check in on news (Septic system went bust, new one installed today, major art project due today, and a computer science test I finished just before I opened DU and landed in this thread).
So I had no idea what this was about. No context threads make me cranky on an ordinary day, and today wasn't ordinary.

(20,049 posts)No worries beyond that. We all have busy lives on many tiers.
I truly cannot count the number of times I've been stumped by a post here myself. Today I knew, which is why I shared. Most of our lives are hectic and full. I completely understand.

(20,049 posts)Just reach out and lean on those you are close to as you can. You're probably going to feel emotions which are all over the place. We all would at a moment like this.
Remember, we're all just humans and do our best at times like this. That's all we can do.
Remember to breathe.

(16,448 posts)The law says their local councils are to appoint a replacement until a special election, but there's nothing to prevent them from being re-appointed and re-elected.

(96,882 posts)And according to BALLOTPEDIA, there's no "interim appointment" in Tennessee. The seat remains vacant until the next general election.
