(108,783 posts)My cousins in Tampa both have a very long liberal history and they're both in their 80s. They've been wanting us to come for a while now (last time I saw them was at my brother's wedding which was many years ago now). I was going to try to visit them when I'm in New Orleans in a couple of weeks, but I couldn't find a flight that worked out. So it will either be later this year or early next year.

Like the Certification Class for Wilderness visits I taught to my Natural Resources college students. Leave No Trace. Not a penny. My dad just died in January, lived in Augusta. I will never step foot in that state again. Thick with trump MAGA assholes. My brother will need to come to me.
Damn I feel bad for the hood people in Florida. But we got some real shit going down here in North Carolina. Here in the western part of our State, 50 percent of vehicle tags are Florida.
Had to go to NCDMV to renew my tags last a few weeks ago. For sale on the wall behind the workers where they sell all kinds of tags for the front of vehicles like, Veteran, College logos, In God We Trust (🤮🤮🤮
etc, they sell a tag that looks like a typical Florida tag, but days Native on it. Why?? WTF, who up here gives a damn if you are native Floridiot. Even MAGAs up here hate Floridians. Florida tags up here are like Bumper stickers against guns in Texas.

(27,633 posts)As a former Northeastern Democrat, lifelong liberal, there is no better gift you can give them than spending a few days with them trashing Trump, SC Judge Thomas, all the idiots on FOX News, Don Jr and Eric, and above all, Ron DeSpot Desantis.
I have friends here who I can thankfully go out with to dinner / lunch, play 9 holes of golf or go to a movie where I DO NOT have to be careful about what I say.
There are others, who yes I am friends with, but we very carefully avoid any discussion that even borders on politics. So even talking about how much 1 lb of hamburger costs can start an argument on why prices are so high.
These are friends I have known for over 20 years. Politics generally were never an issue until Trump came on the scene. We disagreed on some issues, but never with venom. Are they rabid MAGA idiots? No, but there is an appeal I just can't put my finger on. Basically, everything wrong in the US is Biden / Democrats fault, while Trump and his ilk and the Republicans are not to blame for anything. Useless to try and change their minds.
So when I have family or friends come to visit it is a breath of fresh air where we can have reasonable discussions about current events, and yes politics. If we disagree on something we discuss it like adults and don't throw a tantrum like children. So I'm sure they you'll be welcomed with open arms.
When I moved here, 23 years ago, Florida had a unbroken string of Democratic governors since before 1900 and for the 1st time over 100 years Florida elected a Republican Governor (Jeb Bush 1999) and it's been all downhill ever since.
Thank God for DU, it's been my lifeline to sanity since 2001.

To people I know and talk to, it's like he never existed.
When he was in office and we were doing teacher contract negotiations, we were always running into some snag caused by his fiddling around with PERC rules. Now, however, most of those impediments have been removed and it's smooth sailing on the contracts. Not as much as we'd like but some fairly decent increases.

Regarding the toll increases, he should just go home and die already. Disney will find a way to make him the fool again.

(17,821 posts)I haven't been to Florida, except the panhandle, for about 30 years. But even back then there were toll roads down there. They'll shoot themselves in the foot just to stick it to liberals. People on vacation have extra money to spend, but locals driving back and forth to work have less to spend. They aren't going to hurt Disney. Disney raised their prices years ago because the parks were so crowded. But that still didn't stop the tourists. If they want to really hurt Florida, they could shut the parks down. The whole state would be harmed by that, and Florida would lose all that tax money. If I were CEO of Disney, I'd be telling DeSantis that he needs to shut his fucking mouth unless he wants to be remembered as the guy who ran Disney out of the state.

(42,660 posts)That and high sales tax. Owning libs is quite expensive. And predictably regressive.
Pacifist Patriot
(25,212 posts)The toll money is reinvested into the roadways. And yes, state income taxes do pay for that in other states, but there are also states with state income taxes that also have toll roads. Massachusetts springs to mind.
The tourist dollars are the biggest contributor to not having state income tax in Florida.
ShazzieB
(22,590 posts)Most of the tollways are in the Chicago metro area, with a couple (?) that extend further out. And we have had a state income tax for decades.

(385 posts)Dumb Santis. Imposing a new tax on the people who have just paid hundreds or thousands of dollars to go to "The Happiest Place on Earth" in order to punish Disney for outsmarting you is hardly a brilliant election or re-election strategy. Pukes pledged "no new taxes"...Dumb Santis has just broken the cardinal rule of puke politics. He will NEVER be the GQP choice for (failed) President. The voters will respond to his toll road with a caravan of votes for the other guy...Pres. Joe Biden #47.

Disney will get their room money, less in admission, food and concessions.
They could boost the price a bit on the room rates and other amenities.
The park would be less crowded, like it is in the Spring, before Summer season hits.
They would have less waste, require less staff and it would be more enjoyable.
In-State and commuters would suffer, including anyone staying in off-park lodging and eating off-park.
Less people would bring their own food in from the local Walmart and supermarkets too, helping to offset food sales.

(24,876 posts)They should run a huge promotion for Florida residents (they do it regularly) but on a much bigger scale than usual. Slash ticket prices and hotel rates for all state residents. Flood the place with Florida voters basically, and do it AFTER Ronnie DeathSentence does whatever he is going to do.
Let several hundred thousand (or millions of) Florida voters pay his stupid tolls and see how far that gets him.
Florida already has more miles of toll roads than any other state in the country and they want to build more!
Sooner or later people are going to say enough. He is catering to the old blue hairs in The Villages, Boca Raton and Naples. The rest of us see right through him and wont put up with this bullshit. Its clear to anyone paying attention that he is a tiny little man with skin like rice paper and a fragile ego that rivals Trumpys. I think he will wear out his welcome in this state pretty soon.

Tourists will continue to pay admission fees and spend money on food and souvenirs at Disney. They will just now have less in their budget for activities off the Disney campus.

Dude, have you seen what a Disney ticket costs? You can get into the Daytona 500 cheaper, and thats one of the most expensive tickets in auto racing. Its also a one-day event and A LOT of Disney-goers spend several days at the parks. A toll on the roads leading to Disney is basically a rounding error for someone whos bringing a family of four to the park. And it makes DeSantis look like a petulant child.
IronLionZion
(51,267 posts)and their idiot governor is picking a fight with a company that is very popular with families across the US as he runs for president. This could backfire badly on him. With Trump on trial and DeathSentence hating children, there's not much left for that party.

(114,615 posts)I think Disney will win that one easily since he's not going to be charging for access to any of Florida's other attractions.
One thing to consider, all this stuff is popular in Florida, Disney is not well liked. Their prices are too high for most people and their wages are far too low. While it looks like a stupid fight to pick from out of state, it is increasing his popularity in state, although it stupidly fails to address the problems of high prices and low wages.
