Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is escalating his war with The Walt Disney Co., outlining a set of moves against the company in what is amounting to a standoff between a potential 2024 presidential candidate and the entertainment giant.
He said he would seek legislative action to void an agreement that gives Walt Disney World extensive control over development in a district that oversees its sprawling Florida theme park property.
DeSantis also said that his office would be looking at other actions to take against the company, including such things as taxes on Disney World hotels, tolls on roads leading to the theme parks and developing district property near the companys resorts. ....................(more)

(22,777 posts)that at some point, if he's re-elected again, Disney just says fuck it and picks up and moves out of the state. It would be expensive, but I don't doubt they have the wherewithal to do it, and it would really take a HUGE bite out of the state's tourism revenue.

(67,112 posts)country is hating Florida, more than this jerk realizes. I've come across numerous people not coming to Florida, they just don't like the environment he has created. Also, some recent people now realize what's it like living in Florida after Ian, etc.

And it's getting hot and staying hot due to the mass development trashing everything Floriduh had going for itself.
Then they'll go out to shop or to eat and it'll take an hour to move 2 miles in the traffic.
Been here since 77 and have seen some rotten changes. Now I'm too old to move and have no place I'd want to go. Advice is appreciated.

(67,112 posts)for condos are really going up. The traffic is horrible and drivers are often lame and rude. And houses/condos are going up all over the place. I've also noticed high rise storage facilities are being built all of the place. It's not the FloriDUH of my youth. And the once neat scenic woods and wetlands are being plowed over, filled in, and more and more crowded houses/apartments/condos being built. And we have these damn crazy politicians running around. I would never move to FloriDUH now. And it's changing so quickly. I'm at my wits end anymore with FloriDUH. Sorry, I do not have any suggestions. And I often wonder what will happen as I get older.

(1,654 posts)Actually not just Disney - it's all tourists, but when you come from a state that doesn't tax food or pharmacy items, stopping in the grocery or pharmacy can be a big shock. I think Florida taxes the tourist more than most other states. We pay taxes on snacks and prepared meals, but groceries? Might as well tax the air, too, but I hate that - the humidity can be oppressive.

(1,654 posts)And we all know how creative corporate attorneys and accountants can be. Whatever DeSantis goons come up with, I'm pretty sure Disney in the end isn't going to lose much. Disney a number of years ago made a big bet that being welcoming to LGBT would pay off big financially, and they were right. I very much doubt they are going to change just to please DeSantis' base.
Looking at it from another angle, if Disney can come up with enough land cheaply in a climate friendly state not governed by crazy people, they would get a chance to modernize the infrastructure of Disney World from the ground up. One of the troubles of running a theme park, especially one as large as Disney, is trying to modernize infrastructure already in place so it doesn't deteriorate, while also having to spend a lot of money in expansion to keep it fresh so as to please returning visitors as well as the first timers.
When you look at it from the taxing standpoint, taxing the hotels, roads, etc. might backfire. The people wouldn't blame Disney, they would blame the state controlled with an iron fist by DeSantis.
