Get off your lazy dead ass and go to work grandpa - Kansas legislature

Kansas Legislature approves requiring older adults to work to receive food assistance

The Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature approved work requirements for older adults who receive food assistance on Friday, setting up a possible veto fight with Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.

The approval of the legislation, HB 2094, capped a two-year drive by Republicans to bolster work rules for government assistance, after lawmakers in 2022 raised work requirements on most able-bodied adults over Kelly’s veto. This year’s bill expands those requirements to able-bodied adults ages 50 to 59 without children as a condition of aid from the Supplemental Food Assistance Program, once called food stamps.

The Kansas Senate approved the measure 26-12. The Kansas House followed in a 80-42 vote, sending it to Kelly.

Kelly hasn’t said explicitly whether she will veto the measure. But her veto last year and the Kansas Department for Children and Families, which she oversees, opposed the changes – strong signals that she will likely reject it.

So if their children have grown up they have to go back to work. Guess they can be Wal-Mart greeters since most places don't hire those 50 and older.

Yeah, all those great retail and service jobs where you’re on your feet all day and make minimum wage. And most places won’t even consider hiring a person over 50 while at the same time complaining that “nobody wants to work any more.”

She was bend over and in obvious pain. I wish they could have at least given her a chair like they offer cashiers in Europe. I felt sorry that at her age she still had to work. When I see homeless people who are old I always give them. $5 or 10 dollars.

My sister in her 40s couldn't get hired for over a year after she was fired due to her messy divorce.
(Don't think that misogyny is gone from the workforce, women can still get fired for what their husbands do).

Kansas has 2.9% unemployment as of February. Kansas has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country.
If Kansas leaders think measley unemployment benefits are enough to live on, and if, on top of that, they want to deny food to older people, then they're stupid, mean and cheapass motherfuckers.

They're forcing people to work like plantation slaves. That's a Koch thing.

Too bad there aren't any immigrants literally dying to come here. Maybe waiting just feet across the Texas border, willing to work hard for a chance to provide for their families.

Oh well, guess we'll have to work Grandpa to death instead.

Okay the work isn’t easy. The work sucks. But finding a job in your fifties when you’ve been out of the workforce for a while - to make that a condition of receiving food assistance is like telling people to go starve. Which is what they’re doing.

My husband has recently started to look for work. He’s been off the two years since we moved here to CA. He’s got a lot of restaurant mgmt experience, has always worked in hospitality, but he’s in his late 50s. Hes looking for something like 20-24 hrs a week so he takes him $1k a month. He’s has 12 applications for host jobs and has only had ONE INTERVIEW. Most places have said they’ll call him back, but haven’t. I’m pretty sure it’s his age. These casual dining restaurants want young kids. Because money is tight he has to find something until 64 when his Social Security will be $1k a month. I’m afraid he’s going to end up doing fast food which sucks. But you do what you have to do.
