The Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama apologized on Monday after a video which showed him asking a boy to suck his tongue triggered a backlash on social media.

The video, which has gone viral, shows the Dalai Lama, 87, planting a kiss on the boy's lips as he leaned in to pay his respects.

The Buddhist monk is then seen sticking his tongue out as he asked the child to suck it. "Can you suck my tongue," he is heard asking the young boy in the video.

Hard to know with Ghandi because there was a lot of character assassination coming from the British side. I take some of what I read with a grain of salt.
Here's a bit from NPR re Ghandi:

For those who do not know, sticking out one's tongue is a form of greeting in Tibet.
Otherwise, the inappropriate language is something I was in my father when he suffered from dementia. The filters are entirely of and he would often blurt terrible things and be totally unaware that he wasn't expressing something else entirely.
It is very sad.
