The civil trial, currently scheduled for April 25, comes after former Elle magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll accused the former president of raping her in the mid-1990s and sued him for defamation after he denied the allegation.
In a letter to U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan released Tuesday night, Trump attorneys Joseph Tacopina and Alina Habba request a four-week adjournment in the trial, saying Trumps right to a fair trial hinges on the cooling off period after the recent deluge of prejudicial media coverage concerning his unprecedented criminal indictment and arraignment in Manhattan.
Without the pause, many, if not most, prospective jurors will have the criminal allegations top of mind when judging President Trumps defense against Ms. Carrolls allegations, the letter reads, adding that a break would help contain any potential contamination of prospective jurors.
Those jurors, it continues, will have the breathless coverage of President Trumps alleged extra-marital affair with Stormy Daniels still ringing in their ears if [the] trial goes forward as scheduled.

(18,837 posts)First, judges are wise to Trump's stall tactics, and are sick of them. Second, the media circus around his indictment was largely stirred up by Trump himself. And if the judge GAVE him 4 more weeks, they would come up with ANOTHER excuse at that time.

(35,321 posts)it would be unfair to hold him accountable for past crimes while his latest crimes are still in our memory. Therefore, since my client has many future crimes planned, there will be no foreseeable time when accountability is appropriate."

Things didn't play out the way he hoped.
As for contamination, TFG has shown New Yorkers who he really is for over 40 years. A cooling off period would be a pointless delay.
